Recommendation for new Forum Topic?

I'd like to recommend a new forum topic......a POI or GPS software related topic? I've seen quite a few postings for POI editors, voice editors, etc throughout the various forums. I think it would be helpful to have them listed in a separate, dedicated forum with the topics locked. I find myself frequently searching through forum discussions looking for software links.
I'm not suggesting a spam forum but just a convenient location to look for software. The moderator can lock the topics to keep it easy to use.

Your thoughts? (Let the flaming begin....)

excellent idea

as a nubie on this forum, I've been doing a lot of searching and this would be a good idea.

Yep

Sounds like a great idea. Not only a section for discussion, but an area to list the downloads for the various tools.

Yes...with an added caveat...

I'd like to see the operating system requirements also posted, along with the software (for example PC or Mac)...

There is a search bar at the top of each page, if you type a program name within it and hit enter you will be given thread information about the program.

If the thread is locked, then conversation with authors and other members gets harder to handle.

It's easier to search for what you need than putting areas in lock down.

Try typing "GeePeeEx Editor" without the quotes into the search box and find the geePeeEX Editor threads.

Would the forum be another one which allows folks with different brands of GPSr to mingle? I have a feeling that there are a whole bunch of folks coming to the Factory who are unknown to me.

Dealing with the various software programs in an organized fashion would be a plus for me. I follow the nodes and forget where I started if they are spread out. If we try it and it doesn't fly, we can always phase it out. I'm in favor. smile

Ok, so what you are saying is that as long as the user knows the name of the software they are looking for, they can use the search function to find it. But what if they don't know the name or for that matter, what if they don't know the software even exists?

I started this thread after searching for a software link when I couldn't remember the name of the software.

I Agree

I agree that a new forum topic would be helpful. But rather than locking the threads, I believe it would be better if the moderators created a separate thread for each software and prevented members from creating new threads. So only the moderators could create a new thread as new software is added.

For example, the "Software" forum could have the following threads:

  • Mapsource
  • GeePeeEx Editor
  • POIEditor
  • TTSVoiceEditor
  • TTS_Speech_Doctor
  • Magellan Editor
  • POIEdit
  • POI Verifier II
  • The first post in each thread would be a detailed description of the software along with the download links. People could then post questions/comments about the software in the corresponding thread.

    I concur

You hit it, that would be perfect!

    Also agree

It could be useful to one place to look for updates, suggestions, problems, etc.

    it is on the list

Jon and I have been watching this thread closely and so far we like what we see. It may take a while to implement because we are trying to get some other things worked out right now.

Our top priority right now is an issue tracker that will help with the maintenance of POI Files. I have added this to the list of what to look at.

We would more likely make an FAQ are for this stuff with an attached discussion thread.

I am still sick and just trying to keep up with work this week.

    Miss POI

Why lock it down? The others aren't...

And what would be the point of that?

What if someone wanted to point out a new application not previously discussed? Would they then have to put in a request to open a topic?

I am not sure why a new forum discussing apps would need to be locked down vs. the other forums which are not. Why not lock down the other forums as well? For example, the POI Projects forum, should it be locked down to only have topics of currently posted and worked on projects? Right now it is configured as an open forum and seems to work well. I would think the same would be try for an applications forum, no?

    Cheers,
    PT
