construction and detours

I was wondering how the GPS device handles road construction activity that will require a detour. I have a Nuvi 260W. Can I presume that the device will know about the construction and provide a route that takes the construction into account when I begin my trip? Or, will I encounter the construction as a surprise when I come upon it? Does anyone have experience to share with me? Thanks.

Unless you have a traffic receiver (and maybe not even then), the unit has no way of knowing about road construction.

Will you encounter construction

1) The gps doesn't know unless you have traffic subscription

2) Probably so

3) The gps will want to get back on route at all available intersections eg "recalculating". If the detour is marked follow the signs not the gps. I usually don't use the detour function on my gps.

www.aaa.com offen has traffic alerts, they suggested taking a different route around new york city which was much better than getting caught on the highway parking lot during rush hours.
