POI Question

I have been lurking around here for a while, picked up a lot of good information, and now have a question about my Nuvi 200W. I am having trouble deleting Custom POIs. I installed a folder with the following structure...

Folder
.Folder1
..File1a
..File1b
.Folder2
..File2a
..File2b
.Folder3
..File3a
..File3b
etc...

...and it worked fine in the Nuvi. I used POI Loader to delete the files, and I still have this structure on the unit

Custom POIs
.File1a
.File1b
.File2a
.File2b
etc...

I have used POI loader on the unit, and the SD card, reformated the SD card, gone into the Garmin folder and manually deleted the poi.gpi file, done a hard reset of the unit, and I still have those pesky POI files. Is there something else I could try?

?

Are you saying these show up when looking on the GPS (not when viewing the unit via the computer)?

If so, are you using a Mac? If so, empty your trash on the computer while the unit is plugged in via USB.

Yes, these show up on the GPS while not connected to my Windows XP computer. I'm puzzled...

Take the SD card out. Then search the nuvi using My Computer for ALL .GPI files and see if there isn't one lurking in there somewhere.

.

Done.

Found one poi.gpx file in the unit(the one that is supposed to be there), and deleted it. Unplugged the unit and restarted without reloading any *.gpi files, or re-inserting the SD card. Still have those POI files.

Guess I'll look for .gpx files now.

.

Found one .gpx file (my favorites)[deleted], no .csv or .loc files. Next guess?

When you run poiloader.Have

When you run poiloader.Have you tried to select remove all pois listed right under install pois?

One other thought make sure you have the latest poiloader http://www8.garmin.com/products/poiloader/ and since new pois overwrite the old ones.Have you tried to install any new files?

I'm using POI Loader

I'm using POI Loader 2.5.2.0, and have done the hard reset by holding the corner of the screen while powering on.

I can install new POI files, they appear as normal, and are deleted by POI Loader when set to.

I've emailed Garmin, Let's see what they have to say

Make sure you let us know what they come up with.

Thank you for contacting Garmin International. Try emptying the Recycle bin before disconnecting the device from the computer.

Ok, here's a shot in the dark. Before you do this, make sure to back up your Garmin.

Try deleting the clm.nvm file on your Garmin, and then rebooting the Garmin. The file will be regenerated when you reboot.

I saw something on the web a while back that said this file might store waypoint info. I doubt it, but since nothing else seems to work it's worth a shot.

Just a hunch...

Do you have any other custom folders on your Nuvi or on the SD card? I ask because I tried to save my SOURCE (.gpx & .csv) files on my SD card, and ended up with one of the .gpx files added as favorites!?! My SD card had a directory structure like this:

Garmin
>poi
>>Dunkin Donuts
...poi.gpi
>>Boat Launches
...poi.gpi

Points of Interest
>Dunkin Donuts
..Dunkin Donuts.bmp
>>Dunkin Donuts
...Dunkin Donuts.bmp
...Dunkin Donuts.gpx
...Dunkin Donuts.wav
>Boat Launches
..Boat Launches.bmp
>>Boat Launches
...Boat Launches.bmp
...Boat Launches.csv
...Boat Launches.wav

I had to delete the whole "Points of Interest" directory and all it's parts. I guess you can't keep the source files on the Garmin device (or it will try to read/install them).

There was a discussion on this in the past. GPX files on the unit always get added to Favorites as far as I can tell. GPX files on SD cards may or may not get added automatically to Favorites depending on the model.

RTJM,
I just re-read the thread and I see where you said the POIs are visible on the GPSr, but you didn't specifically say that you were talking about being listed under EXTRAS/Custom-POIs. Is that where you are seeing them, OR, are you just seeing an icon on the map.

As for the Recycle Bin, you will recall that I asked early on if you were using a Mac. I've never heard that a Windows computer could install a recycle bin on a GPSr or card and have the contents still visible to the GPSr. Did you try what was suggested?

gpx / favorites

When any gpx file is copied to, or placed directly into the gpsr file system, Without loading with poi loader, that file will end up displaying in your "Favorites". There is plenty of discussion on this topic within the forum.

Your favorites are in the file system as "current.gpx"

When a csv or gpx file is loaded via poi loader, it is converted to a .gpi file. Your Extras/Custom poi files are then listed in the gpsr file system as "poi.gpi"

You can rename the "poi.gpi" to "whatyouwant.gpi" (then delete the poi.gpi) and poi loader won't overwrite that renamed file the next time you run poi loader. Then, the next time you load files using poi loader you will have a "poi.gpi" and "whatyouwant.gpi" you can then follow the same procedure. There is plenty of discussion on renaming the gpi file as well.

The point being, you just simply cannot drag/drop or copy/paste a file directly into the gpsr file system, internally or on sd card, if done you won't get the expected results. Currently, csv and gpx poi files must be loaded using poi loader

The POIs are showing up under >Extras >Custom POIs >files...

I did as Garmin suggested, it didn't work. I replied to the email, with no response for a week. I called them today, the voice on the other end of the phone had never heard of such a problem. He talked me through a Hard Reset, deleting the poi.gpi file, deleting the POI folder, deleting the current.gpx file, deleting the GPX folder, checking the file names on some of the .bin files, put me on hold while he sought other help, and finally told me I was a lost cause, and they would replace the unit.

I'm going to feel naked for the next 2 weeks without the Nuvi in the car with me!

Did you try deleting the clm.nvm file?

I forgot to mention that. I did do that, but then the unit wouldn't start for me.
