Chit Chat Thread for the week of September 01, 2008

This is the place to talk about things that are not gps related, you can discuss whatever you would like, as long as it is clean. Remember we have families that have their children involved in the GPS fun and we don't want to make parents feel uncomfortable when their children ask what that word means.

Have fun...

This thread will be closed on Monday and a new one will be opened.

I was told if you don't like the weather in Idaho..

Wait 15 minutes, I found it to be true... Sunshine, thunder and lightning, rain, hail, and wind all on one day.

The weather in southern california..

is rather boring... For excitement we have ground movement.... Nothing like a little trembler to quicken the pulse...

Or you could

Or you could live in Flor-i-duh, and be like my significant other, and get nervous everytime a tropical system forms out in the Atlantic or in the Carribean.
I guess it gives her something to worry about ! Now she's all worried about Hanna !
Oh well !

Anyway folks - hope you all have a GREAT week !

Hope everyone had a wonderful weekend!

Another hurricane, geez.

I'm tracking Hanna forecast

I put forecast coordinates as waypoints into Mapsource, Plot a route and then check each new forecast to see the closest approach point to our home on the beach.
But, I've been a hurricane tracker & amateur cane forecaster for many, many years.
Just a hobby.
BTW, as of the latest forecast Hanna should get within 73.3 miles from our house. But we'll be on the good side.
Jerry, you should be closer in JAX.

Hurricanes vs Vacation

My wife and I had planned to book a long weekend in Tulum Mexico this month. With the hurricanes blowing in, we may not get there. I would hate to book it and not be able to go or worse yet get there and have to evacuate.

Last long weekend of summer

Lots of campers were on the road for the last long weekend of the summer. There was rain and snow depending where you went for the weekend. The cool weather and the fresh air always seems to make every one hungry. Well this young one was ready to get at it.

I hope the pic's show up.

Wow

Did anyone happen to catch the forecast of Joe Bastardi of Accu-Weather on Fox's channel tonight .
Forecasting Hanna to skirt the East coast of Florida and make a Cat3-4 hit somewhere approx. between Charleston and Wilmington, NC. then going up thru D.C. and up to Boston as a Cat I or strong TS.
He called it a monsterr storm by then .
Late Friday/early Sat. for landfall.

Great Weather in New England

We can feel Fall in the air, but it was still pretty warm this Labor Day weekend.

Today we used the GPS to plan a 300 mile day trip on the motorcycle. Winding through the back roads.

It was a great day.

Looks like the same weather all week too!

--
Mike

You're right. What will be Josephine is developing off the western coast of Africa as we speak.

Back to work

Good Morning Everyone

I am sorry that I have not been around lately I have gone back to school to get my S endorsement for my CDL. Lots of study lots of test and lot of money to the state of CA. So far I have taken 5 state test and have 3 more to take and another 1 - 1 1/2 Mo's left. The good news is when this is over it will mean a $ 8.65 pay raise but living on 600.00 every 2 weeks is ruff. no other state makes a CDL driver do this to take students to a Prom or Disney Land. Oh well this is CA got to love it. I will be back when I can as I can. Miss you all smile

IKE

I am keeping an eye on Ike.

.

Then Josephine is already named.

Hurricanes, maybe like Hanna, that stay just offshore are dangerous. Staying over the gulfstream lets them stay strong all the way up the east coast. I lived in Massachusetts as a kid and went through several hurricanes there. We never evacuated, just hunkered down with portable radios and kerosene lanterns.

Actually, for a kid is was kind of fun.

.

But what kind of nut would name a hurricane Gustav? I mean wouldn't just Gus have been good enough.

--
nuvi 200 | lifetime maps

BLAME CANADA

The French Canadians in Quebec said that we need to have several French sounding names to represent French-Canadian culture...even though there is a one percent chance a hurricane will ever make it up that far north. So, Gus was removed and Gustav was its replacement. Jody was replaced by Josephine, and Caitlin was replaced by Claudette. Now, look up old hurricanes and Gus, Jody, and Caitlin were never used previously. And as most people know, when a hurricane creates enough damage, destruction and death, that name is retired. so, that is a good thing to know, and knowing is half the battle.

Silly Reporters

Have you guys and girls been watching the news on Gustav this weekend on the different news networks? I mean come on...how much more crazy do you have to be going outside in 100 mph winds to report on a hurricane? I seen reporters holding on to poles and some getting blown about in high winds...one guy was almost hit with a cardboard sign...others had to be tethered down with rope.I dread the day when on live national tv when one of these guys gets hit with a flying roof or something. As someone once said about a hurricane,"its not that the wind is blowing but WHAT the wind is blowing,I don't care how much pushups you did that morning, when you get hit by a flying Volvo, you're a goner. And now we have 2 more hurricanes coming up from the Atlantic to test that theory.

Ok - I don't really remember them, but I've seen a couple in a display case - right next to the memory storage device as large as a washing machine. Now, several gigabytes in a flash drive as small as something really small. mrgreen

I remember the punch cards

I remember the punch cards for the FORTRAN machines.

When I went to college in the mid 80's the library had one of those compact hard drives...the Winchester Drive...the size of a decent sized box with huge heavy platters in it.

I also remember when my friend bought his home PC years ago (just a few years later) and spent the extra money for a 30MB hard drive versus the 20MB hard rive. I assured him that if he used that computer for the rest of his life, he would NEVER fill up those extra 10MB.

Sheesh...
