So I gather my garmin nuvi must store data. I wonder how far back it keeps a record of where my vehicle has traveled. Next thing - insurance companies will be using it to adjust rates.

.

Yeah, if you are going to commit a crime you should turn off your GPS and cell phone beforehand!!

Yikes!

GadgetGuy2008

I'll keep that in mind!

Wonder which units

Would be interesting to know what units they used, and if it this technology is available to all. The recent search history is the same as your web history. But being able to track location and time is something else. I would assume that the trucker was using an active gps system that was reporting back to a central computer every so many minutes. That is the type that my Dad had on his phone truck years ago. They would report via cell phone every so many minutes when driving, and then when parked. Then call again when moving.

New Units Have Track Log

The newer Garmin units have a built in track log feature. It automatically keeps track of 10,000 points and cannot be turned off.

My work truck tracks every

My work truck tracks every move I make. The company can watch my every move 24hrs a day.

Removal

Does anyone know if it is possible to remove/clear the history from your unit? Perhaps resetting the unit may do so if this matter is of concern.

With some units, yes

My 760 records track logs, which can be examined and saved in MapSource. It automatically records 10,000 track points, after which it deletes the oldest points to make room for the newest points. On a recent long trip, this translated to about 900 miles of driving before the oldest points were being overwritten. The points per mile will vary according to how many turns and curves you drive. The 760 menu has an option to clear the track logs any time I want to clear it and start over. But there is no option to turn off the recording.

nothing new

A gps keeping a track of data is not new. My oldest unit, a handheld gps-12 does that. Although my 3 newer units (c340, nuvi 350, nuvi 660) do not. It is nice to take the gps-12 and download the track to my pc to see exactly when and at what speed I was going. I have heard of people beating out speeding tickets by using this data.

I have requested information about 2 years ago from Garmin...

... I wanted to develop a tool to plot my previous trips, so I keep history of them and most of all I wanted to share it with everybody here. But they said they don't store data... If the story is right, I think what they gave me was pure smelly BS.

Nuvi 750

My new 750 has tracks and you can turn it off and/or clear it any time you want.

The Hansel and Gretel Bread Crumbs, were able to be cleared and started over and I believe erased from the system.

That sucks. I want to have that as an option, not a requirement. Do you know which units?

I just read that article

I just read that article this morning in the VA Pilot newspaper. That person is accused of killing four family members.Glad they have something to help convict this killer.

Black Box

I recently read a report that said, in part:

"...Road-traffic management would itself be improved to quite an extent. For example, some of the newer cars are equipped with GPS technology so sophisticated that it acts like an airplane Black Box. The device can record data (for a short duration) like speed of vehicle, whether brakes were applied or not, if the seatbelt was used or not, so on, and of course, the precise location of the vehicle right down to a few feet accuracy."

I included a mention of this in my article
