Newbie Dumb Question

I am just getting started a few minutes ago. When I dowload a poi file, and go to place them in a folder, they are all assigned the name "active CSV" even though I downloaded two completely different files. Shouldn't they have unique names such as "Stateparks.csv" BBQspots.csv"etc.?

They should have unique names

They should. How are you downloading them?

how

I am simply hitting download on the site. My download manager opens asks if I want to save the file. I say yes. I select the folder I created for POI's. The name of the file is always "active.csv" or "download.csv". It removes the the name of the file for some reason. Never had this happen. I can type in the name but I shouldn't have to, since each file I am downloading has a unique name.

Hmmmm,

Well what happens if you right click the file and pick to save it to your computer (rather than letting your browser's download manager handle it)?

Same thing

download manager still comes up and says "active.csv"

Solved!

If I instead of saving, open the file as an Excel document, then "save as" it keeps the file name. I will just do it this way. Thanks!

In other words rmbarlow,

In other words rmbarlow, download the files through your browser, NOT through your download manager. Then the files should be named properly.

Not sure what you mean

I am using my browser. I use MSN. It has a built in download manager that come up.

Excel 2003?

I never use EXCEL. Could it be that I am using EXCEL 2003? It has all the updates.

You stated you are using

You stated you are using msn.If like me you are using msn explorer and that is the results you will get.You just have to change the name of the file. From then on when you update and direct to the folder it will replaced the other folder and keep the name.Go to my programs and pick internet explorer and download from POI Factory and it will keep the same name doing it that way.Try it and you will see what I mean.

Thanks

Charlie, I think you are saying use internet explorer as my browser instead of MSN explorer. I will try this! Right now I am downloading Service Pack 3 for Excel 2003. I thought that was the problem.

I have no idea but must say their is a lot of good things MSN Explorer has.I have used it since 1999.Here is one you may run into sooner or later.Try to download Cracker Barrel.I kept downloading it and never could get it to work until I figured out to use Internet Explorer to download it.It is save in explorer. It is a pain in the neck everytime I update it.This is the only one I have run into that problem with so far.

Glad you solved it but I think you were overlooking an easy solution. Download the files one at a time and then RENAME them to what they should be. Easy.

That is what I do.Like I

That is what I do.Like I stated above after you name them one time all you have to do is download stright to folder and it replaces the older file and maintains the name.

Thanks for all your help, everyone.

Soon I will see how many of these I can get into my Nuvi 650 without a data card. I have no idea...

.

Typically, you can get approximately 8,000 - 10,000 Custom POI locations per megabyte of space.
