Chit Chat Thread for the week of August 18, 2008

This is the place to talk about things that are not gps related, you can discuss whatever you would like, as long as it is clean. Remember we have families that have their children involved in the GPS fun and we don't want to make parents feel uncomfortable when their children ask what that word means.

Have fun...

This thread will be closed on Monday and a new one will be opened.

Rain.

Be nice to have some rain in So Cal. Only rains here in January, through March- if we are lucky! It is rare to have rain other months. Most of the rain goes back to the ocean anyway.

That's why it's the Golden State. And it can't handle much rain without landslides taking out the hills and houses. I lived there for 27 years, always exciting, now I'm beginning to miss it.

Trip to Lancaster, PA

We're heading to Lancaster, PA this coming Saturday through Monday.

All summer long my 5.5 year old daughter has asked to go and has now instructed her near 3 year old younger brother to beg as well.

She has tried to boycott camp, etc. in order to clear her schedule for a trip to Lancaster.

I decided that we would pack the camper while they sleep. I'll wake her up very very early in the morning...tell her that I dreamed we went to Lancaster and ask her if she wants us to make my dream come true.

Prior to having kids, my wife and I used to go to the area a few times a year to visit, relax, eat and shop. The kids really enjoy it too. It is one of those trips that seemingly leave indelible memories for them.

I know the area well, but a few months ago a fellow member put together some Lancaster POI's and posted them here. Once there, I'll have more fun toying with the GPSr while comparing his POIs to our own favorite places.

Looks like we may miss the worst of TS Fay. So far this morning, partly cloudy skies, light wind out of the east and no rain... yet.

Yeah, it looks like just a big rainmaker right now.

And you can all use it down in the south, it will help you get out of drought. especially when she passes through the state then into the open ocean then hooks back into Florida at Jacksonville, and spews rain all over Georgia and the south.

Golden State

Its really hard to get CA out of a persons blood! For some reason it just really sets in. You can move away, go on a trip, see some mighty beautiful country, but good ole California will always remain. The central valley isnt the prettiest place to live, I will admit, but it would be mighty hard to leave this state!!

HURRAH for California!!!!!!!!

If you dont know where you're going, any road will get you there!!

Lancaster trip...

It is a bit of a haul, especially the return trip. The GPSr says it is about 3.5 hours, but getting through New Jersey usually means the trip home is between 5-6 hours.

We have some standard stops. We stay in a little hotel off of the beaten path, but still minutes from everything. The kids (and the grown-ups!) like to look out of the window and walk out of the door to be greeted by cows and cornstalks.

The kids are looking forward to a day at Dutch Wonderland Amusement Park.

Thanks again for the Lancaster PA POI's

Bob, thanks in advance.
I'm always playing with the GPSr, the ham radios and XM receiver. I probably don't NEED your POIs to find my way around and have a good time, but armed with the extra information I feel assured that we WILL uncover and discover some new stuff! Thanks for stoking the fire and adding more value to the Garmin 660 we will be traveling with.

If I think you missed any of our favorite sites, I'll let you know and we can enhance your current offerings!

With much anticipation,
Rob - Long Beach, NY

Yeah, but at what, 4mph? We had off & on rain from the outer bands for the last 2 days. Pretty windy last night, too.

Storming Fay

So did you guys made out ok in the storm? Whats the status on Fay now?

--
Mike

Cedar Key

Right now the center is a little north of Cedar Key, on the northern Gulf Coast. The center of Fay is expected to continue crossing the northern Florida peninsula tonight. Then move near or over the Florida panhandle on Saturday heading towards Pensacola - at a whopping 6mph. Which is why there has been so much flooding.

Which means that by the time its over, this storm will have just about followed the entire shape of Florida. From Key West, north over the entire peninsula to Jacksonville, then turning west towards the panhandle, over Tallahassee and on to Pensacola which is right at the Florida-Alabama state line.

In the 30 years I've lived here, I've never seen a storm follow that path.

Here's a link to the path:

Tampa, FL - Garmin nüvi 660 (Software Ver 4.90), 2021.20 CN NA NT maps | Magellan Meridian Gold

Crazy path

That path looks crazy....maybe Fay wanted to do some sight seeing over Florida...lol...Maybe shes thinking of retiring there. But yea...moving soooo slow there's going to be alot of flooding, and half of Florida is swamp and marshes already.

Not much of a sign of rain

Not much of a sign of rain here in Phoenix lately either! But people out here can't drive in it well, so maybe it's not all bad news.

Seattle

Couldn't believe it. Left Houston on July 31 and it was 102 degrees at 4:00pm, arrived in Seattle at 10:30pm and it was raining and 54 degrees, almost cut in half. Then the second week there it was 89 degrees in Houston and 97 degrees in Seattle. Go figure!! Came back to Houston last night and it was raining and 79 degrees, left Seattle when it was 70 degrees. This weather is really hard to figure out.

Fay

Well, as Fay moves West, the outer bands are reaching up into Georgia, and giving us a good soaking (nothing like Florida has experienced). We can use the rain, but North Georgia is really in need of it, and I doubt that they will see more than 1/2 inch. Looks like she plans to soak us through the weekend.

Wouldn't it be nice if we could get the Chatahoochie to run backwards (North) to take some of that water from Florida and give it to the areas that really need it? Odd that it always falls where it isn't really needed, or in such volume that it simply causes folks grief! I guess we shouldn't question Mother Nature..........
