maps not up to date 2009

i knew it all along, but now confirmed. i am on vacation in Destin Fl and using my nuvi 680. i input my condo as destination and twice was told to turn into a non-existing street , which happens to be a gated community - unless it was a road before some developer changed it to a gated community. i just continued straight with "recalculating" and found a major street to turn on and got there anyway

There are many errors.

Oh, there are many errors in the map. I know of two within 5 miles of where I live. In each case the map thinks that two streets/roads connect when in fact they do not. In one of the cases, I can use the street view on Google Maps and see that there is no road where the map says that there is one.

My Garmin is great fun when I already know the way to where I am going. And it will get me there if I don't know the way. I just may have to be creative.

We have to remember that this technology is in its infancy, and to expect a map of the US (or any other country) to be 100% correct is asking too much.

Recalculating

As a fairly new nuvi owner/user, I must admit that I find it great that nuvis will recalculate without any nuvi input from the user when we drivers ignore a recommended instruction, whether due a non-existent road, gated access, no-left-turn intersection or whatever.

My House

My house is not even on any maps and I've been there for over a year. How long does that typically take for be added?

.

I've read in here where users said it could be 2 to 3 years and in some cases longer depending on the area of the country.

Hi We were on holidays near

Hi
We were on holidays near Buffalo and needed a coffee. I ask to go to Dunkin Donuts and it send me into a dead end in the middle of nowhere. It started to recaculated for 5 minutes as if it went into a tild condition.

I simply stop my destination and restart the Nuvi and it seems to go back in operation.

Its kind of scary when its night time and you are lost.

We were in Chattanooga

We were in Chattanooga looking for the moon pie factory. Each person on the cruise was bringing something unique from their home state. Well my gps lost it's mind and had us going around in circles.

The maps take several years sometimes to be corrected.

NJ Map

There's a street listed on the map by me that doesn't exist but still on the maps for the past 5 years and new streets that were established at that time are not on any.

How to report map errors & additions

NAVTEQ and TeleAtlas both have feedback forms on their web sites for reporting map errors or new streets/addresses which are missing:

http://mapreporter.navteq.com/dur-web-external/secured/submi...

http://www.teleatlas.com/ForConsumers/MapFeedback/index.htm

Mapping our World

Mapping our World is a daunting task. Overall our maps are getting better.

Unfortunately, we only notice the discongruencies of our maps and not the overwhelming accuracy of the rest.

Different government entities, subdivision developers, and road builders make independent and sometimes inconsistent decisions with one another. Rivers change course and flood. Bridges collapse. Before GPS most of those decisions had little widespread consequence. Now, we're stuck with the legacy of those decisions and conditions.

Our GPSr have a wonderful feature allowing a correction to occur though not yet in real time. We can help our map makers get even better through our feedback. One day, soon I hope, our mappers will tighten the update date loop from years to months to weeks to days to it just happened.

The Rand McNally or Delorme paper maps don't update themselves and have the same discongruencies. These map publishers did introduce a consistent product that compensated for "mistakes." Some publishers deliberately introduced errors into their maps so they could detect plagiarism.

Yes I've travelled a road that had a four foot gap in it that Lola didn't show. An almost bridge had collapsed. A four wheel drive might have made it through without it.

My MSN Traffic says that I-90 is closed (it isn't). Lola routes me around the "closure" none the less.

My basic reality: No map is ever "up to date."

I prayed to G-d for patience, and G-d said "Be patient!"

Forgive the soap box.

closed roads

Yes, Interstate 40 through Knoxville, Tennessee is CLOSED for 18 months for major construction. I mean the actual interstate is GONE, missing, and is being rebuilt to widen, replace and move several bridges.... But Garmin doesn't have it on their maps. This closure was known by the TDOT, State, and other agencies for well over a year.... Hell, even Google and MapQuest knew about it.

The interstate CLOSED on May1st, 2008 and will not reopen till November 2009....come on Garmin.

When I talked to Garmin about it, they said they didn't know about it and sine it wasn;t closed when they finalized the maps they couldn't change it. ANd then they said since it'll re-open in 2009 they WON'T change it for the next update....WTF!!!?!?!?!

---------------------------------------------------

Ok, another bad thing I noticed. When on our recent winery trip, I needed to get gas, and I used the GPS to locate a station. Well, it said there was a BP less then 5 miles away. According to the map it looked to be just inside the state park limits. I figured it was just a slight mapping error. Well, it WAS.... There WAS NO gas station within 20 miles of where we were. In fact when i got back to the point where I located looked for the station the next one was 25 miles in the other direction. Locals I talked to at the station said that there had not been one in the area the GPS took me for 5+ years. I dang near ran out of gas in the middle of frikkin' no where without a cell phone signal and without an On-Star signal either. By the time we got to a gas station my wife was freaking out frantically trying to reach On-Star and get AAA on the cell phone. I was coasting in neutral down hill to save gas and had my emergency flashers on, weaving in and out of traffic so I didn't have to slow down and loose momentum. When I pulled up to the pump the engine died on me.

I ALMOST lost faith in Gamirn that afternoon..

I Agree

I work in a small town (1,600 people). I have already sent in 67 corrections in this town alone. I could just imagine what it's like in a large town if they can't even get this right. I've sent in a correction a total of 10 times over the past 3 years and the road is still showing up on the maps, even though it is not there. Come on folks, this is getting to be ridicious. I have talked to Navteq and they said that they will send someone to investigate it. That was 3 years ago. Still the road remains. If someone came out, then they were blind in the first place since I've been living here for 30 years and there has never been a road there. Hell, I even told Navteq to send me an application and I would ride North Carolina and get half this stuff straightened out but they haven't sent me one. The reason that roads are not changed on a timely manner is because we don't pay them. They earn their money by putting in Points of Interest even though they are wrong. That's why they can't keep up. Oh well, I tried and will continue to try.

They Wont Change them

I have E Mailed and Sent pictures. to both Garmin and Navtec. They are in no hurry to Change. My road was the Lincoln Highway. It has been a major road since about 100 years before CARS. When the renamed US 30 the Lincoln highway in our County and Renamed my road the Old Lincoln highway...It Screwed up everything from my Zip Code+ 4 to the Street numbers. We have written to Congress and ODOT to no avail.

Stay On Them

Stay on them. Send in the corrections every chance that you get. It took me 3 years to get them to add a subdivision that had over 300 houses and 9 streets. Now I am working on getting them to add a Bypass that DOT has just finished. They knew that this was going to happen because DOT notified them but where is it? This ByPass is a major link between two cities and is a major artery next to I-95. So Navteq; where is it? Been finished for almost a year and it still does not show up on your maps. When corrections are sent in, it is with your map. When you send back an email and say that correction has already been made; then why don't we see the corrections on YOUR MAP?

I'm not so shure ???

There are roads that where on my 2008 maps that are not on my 2009 map. On one road County road S-6 N. my c-550 is missing over 5 miles While going South on S-6 it missing one mile and there are more. Sorry this is not a new road for it is over 150 years old it is part of the old Yuma AZ trail. Plus there are more as well. I just let Jill get mad at me.

Millions

There is no way with all the millions of streets in the US, and how fast they change, that any new maps could be perfectly accurate.

Use your mind

yanksforever's picture

yanksforever I agree with you 100%, if people need a GPSr to find their own house they need more than a mapping device, probably medicine would work better.

People use your common sense, or your going to drive over a cliff or in to a wall or something similar. If the location is not on your map and your not updated, then check with online mapping to see if it's there, if it is buy the update, if not don't buy it.
Go to both of the links above and report it and wait. If your in a major city you might see the update sooner than if you live in the sticks, thats just the way it works.

If you don't like the way it works, open your dresser drawer and place your GPSr in it and buy yourself a $3.00 gas station map and see if it's any more accurate.

@Use Your Mind - While I do

@Use Your Mind - While I do agree with some points your mention about if it's your neighborhood/house/town, but what about those that it's not their house, neighborhood, or town??

If you look back at my post, I was in the mountains of Virginia, on vacation, and was running out of gas, and my Garmin told me to turn right to go to a BP gas station ~ 2 miles up the road.... only to find out that the station doesn't exist (and NEVER has) and the next closest gas station was 20 miles in the opposite direction. And the one I finally got to was a mom & pop station with 2 pumps.

Wow

Ater reading all these posts makes me glad I didn't spend any serious money buying this gadget.I turn it on and run around town and it seems pretty amazing to me, but I've lived here for more than 30 years so it would be kinda hard to get me lost. But we were thinking of going to visit relatives in Dallas in the near future, now that may turn out to be a real adventure, but overall I would say I'm pretty satisfied.

Need a third major mapping company

I'm looking forward to another competitor to the two big map companies. Perhaps Garmin will take that on since the clock is ticking on their relationship with Navteq. Ditto Google. Ditto Microsoft. Perhaps all three will join in together on this venture.

Constuction Updates!

Ok - Microsoft has Construction Updates for Streets & Trips and MapPoint. I've downloaded them and found that if the state/local jusrisdiction submitted them, they're included on the construction update download.

I was a member of the 'AAA' and had gone to them (years ago, mind you) to plan trips for free. One of the benefits of being a member. They had the updated construction information and would recommend alternate routes or bypasses.

Why doesn't NavTeq or TeleAtlas implement such a thing? One would think that this would be easy enough to incorporate - they offer other downloads, why not that? Then, when the construction is completed, the next construction update will reflect that.

Hmmm - just a thought. rolleyes

And now, back to your regularly scheduled forum, already in progress . . .

Construction Updates

I agree, construction updates would be great. It would also be nice if we could input our own corrections and share them, just like we share POIs.

Don't wate your time with

Don't wate your time with NAVTEQ. I submitted 3 corrections and got told all 3 times, that the corrections, did not reflect real world. WHAT?? I drive by those corrections EVERY Day, so some clown behind a desk is telling me they are wrong. I complained 3 times, and did not get a single reply.

Waste of time having a map reporter, if this is the kind of service they offer with it.

Well, sombody's listening at Navtec

I put in an error report last August (this year).

It had to do with a "T" intersection where the street name ended, but the state route made a right.

Jane always said "Turn right on Merrimac Trail", when in reality, you turned right onto Capitol Landing Rd."

Thru Mapquest I discovered that depending on where you had the cursor, depended on the street name displayed (on Capitol Lndg Rd.) until the next intersection.

I submitted the data directly to Navtec at their website and am surprised that it was fixed so quick. Of course, sombody else could have submitted it before me, years ago sad

your gas get so low is not Garmin's fault...I do agree that the maps leave some to be desired but you are responsible for your gas getting below a 1/4 tank in an unfamiliar area...
