Alerts Not Showing Up On Garmin 660

I have a Garmin 660 and have downloaded my POI's to a folder and manually loaded them in my GPS to alert me at distances of 15000 feet for example. The files download fine, but the alert perimeters do not show up on the GPS in all cases. Some have them and some don't. I tried to create a "TourGuide" folder, naming the files .csv and manually setting alert distances with no luck. Any ideas on what I am doing wrong. Proximity alerts and Custom POI's are turned on. Thanks!

Hi markhart,

I think setting your alerts to 2.8 miles is a little far. Why don't you set them to 1 mile or less (¼ mile = 1320ft., ½ mile = 2640ft., ¾ mile = 3960ft. and 1 mile = 5280ft.

Also, if I'm not mistaken, for your alerts to function you have to be on the road the poi is on and traveling in that direction.

TourGuide alerts use "radius" alerts. Your 15000ft. (or 2.8 mile alert would work, with the (TourGuide) type of poi's.

Check out Phil Hornby's explanation of alerts here:

alerts

Your alerts are set way too far ahead. AT alert time the gps will not see the target from that distance. Even a selected poi too far from the road will miss the alert function.

Alerts not showing up.

Thanks for all the suggestions. A few examples that I have loaded are Panera Bread and Pilot Travel Centers. These show up on the GPS as CUSTOM POI's with the ALERT perimeters. I have loaded Flying J Travel Centers and numerous other files and they don't appear on the CUSTOM POI list with the alert information that I entered in the POI Loader program. I have changed the distance, etc and it still won't show the ALERT info. I am guessing it may have something to do with the file name perhaps? Thanks.

3D Mode Alerts

My GPS is in the 3D mode and the poi's with the alerts working go off just fine in 3D.

Alerts

I've used alerts 2 miles in advance and they worked fine for me. They also work in 3D mode.

Your question had me puzzled at first because I forgot that if I look at the detailed info screen of a custom POI that was loaded with an alert in manual mode, it will display the alert information.

Anyway, I have always loaded my POI files in manual mode from POI Loader. As the Loader steps through each file, some I set with alerts, most I don't.

For example, the highway rest area file (Rest Areas.csv, Rest Area.wav, Rest Area.bmp) I have always loaded with a 10,560ft (2 miles) distance. When I look at the details of any rest area POI, it shows:

Alert Information:
Distance: 10561ft
Speed: none

So as a test, I downloaded your example of the Flying J locations and loaded them (Flying J Travel Plaza.csv, Flying J Travel Plaza.bmp). I didn't bother with an audio alert file.

I loaded the rest area file as I have always done with a 2 mile alert. I loaded the Flying J file using your example of 15000ft. The remaining files (stores & restaurants) I loaded with no alert.

The rest area detail was the same as above. Next, I picked several of the Flying J locations at random, and they all displayed as follows:

Alert Information:
Distance: 15000ft
Speed: none

Is this the information you say is not displayed? Are you sure when running POI Loader, and you step through the files that you are picking the right file(s) to set the proximity alert?

I'm scratching my head trying to figure out what might be going wrong. confused

Alert Information not displaying

When I do it, I get the whole list of Flying J's with their address and telephone number, but no alert info. Like I said, I have Pilot Travel Centers that display the alert info and Panera Bread that displays alert info. I am loading all files with POI Loader manually and entering various distances for alerts. Is there a limit to how many Custom POI's a 660 or 680 will hold? I have quite a few installed. Thanks

I doubt It

I don't think you are hitting the max. Here's an example:

thetick wrote:

Yes the 32 file limit per folder has been around on the previous version of POI Loader. Also the max number of Custom POI folders on Nuvi 350 is 256.. not sure about other Nuvi models. That's 32*256 = 8196 Custom POI files allowed.

Also recently with my Nuvi 350 I have 1,014,699 Custom POIs, using 21 folders and 403 files.

You can read the whole topic here:

Do you have the latest version of POI Loader - 2.5.2.0? I'm running out of ideas. Have you tried loading just a few files at a time and slowly add more. I know it sounds like a time consuming pain, but it should work.

Alerts Not Displaying

I created a new folder called POI-2, and loaded the Texas Roadhouse file into it. I added "TourGuide" to the file name for radial alerts. I downloaded the latest version of POI Loader onto my computer, and tried to download the Texas Roadhouse file. At first it did not recognize the file. I then added ".csv" to the end of the file name, and it loaded 289 locations. When I fired up the GPS and went to CUSTOM POI's, Texas Roadhouse was not on the list. Ideas?

Did you use the scroll button at the bottom of the screen? Depending on how you set up your folders, Texas Roadhouse might appear under a category named after your folder (POI-2).
