VantagePoint Software

I started using VantagePoint software with my Maestro 4250. Its been working great.

Tonight I checked the Magellan website for newer software and noticed that the Maestro units are not considered compatible with the VantagePoint software. I thought when I downloaded the software originally the 4250 was compatible with the software.

Does anyone know anything about the software and its use with the 4250?

Neat

That's very cool that it's been working for you! I've just downloaded it and will have to play with it to see what it does, but you're right, Magellan doesn't say it's compatible. Hopefully it'll work for my 4210 as well.

Edit - Sweet! You can import the maps and POI's from the unit into the program, plan a route etc. From what I saw, you could synch the routes etc. to the GPS, but I was a bit nervous to try it as I'm not sure whether or not the format is compatible. You CAN export it as a GPX file, but I can't get the parameters down right for import into the POI Editor. However, this looks like a great program to pre-plan a route on a large screen. I'll have to throw it on my laptop as well!

Thanks for the tip!

Cheers!

VantagePoint Waypoint Icons - any luck adding icons?

VantagePoint has a few Waypoint icons has anybody had any luck adding new icons to the pallet. I would like to add company icons to locations that I vist so that I will be able to glance and see if one particular vendor has an outlet on a nearby exit.

Anyone have a clue how to add new icons to the waypoint editing pallet?

I figured it out. Order.txt is the file I was looking for.

Once I reset that permissions on the waypoints\media\32X32\order.txt file I was able to add the icon to the file, restart VantagePoint and the icon.pgn file I put in the directopry was now an option.

I was so close but posted the question out of fustration!

Thanks!!!

VantagePoint not compatible with 4250?

Have you had any luck hooking it up with the 4250?
According to the VantagePoint page, 4250 is not on its compatible list. When I tried to connect it with the USB cable to the PC, the functions under My GPS tab were all greyed out. And the left panel said - GPS receiver is not connected.

Even though the VantagePoint Software itself seems to be a great piece of tool, but the overall performance of their applications and especially supports at Magellan seem to be in constant beta testing fluxes...

One of the perils I fear dealing with file transfer is that of the Windows restoring function - delayed cache writing may mess up the whole unit which acting as an external hard drive, while its connecting with the USB cable.

Has anyone encountered any problem after disconnecting the USB cable from the unit to the PC?

Thanks.

Not compatible means........

File formats and such are different on the newer Maestro line. It is NOT compatible.

If you TELL Windows you want to remove the device before you actually pull the plug, there will be NO problem.

I have, however, had some piece of Magellan software complain that you just made a grevious error......after having done it exactly right.

I've seen this twice but don't remember what I was doing at the time; might be a AAA update. No operational problems after that though.

disadVantagepoint - too many proprietary road blocks

I have come to such conclusion after working with my new 4250 unit for a short while - constantly dealing with different incompatibilities with different pieces of applications, e.g., their POI Editor, VantagePoint, .csv, .mgln, .poi, blah..blahblah......pure frustration and agony...

lastly, I was trying to export the waypoints I set up with Vantagepoint(in their own GPX format) to .csv in order to import to their own POI Editor which has to be installed from the CD provided for each particular model that you own...
I eventually had to go back to googlmap then worked through google's .kml file then detour after detour just to set up the magellan specific POI file - .mgln in order to load it into my 4250 personal POIs.

No wonder such line of Magellan business is going down and being sold. I refuse to even try their customer support route again which I'm sure would bring you more frustration...Haven't we seen enough protectionism going down the drain one after another in the wide open and neck-breaking competitive tech field?

Btw, anyone know any app that would convert the VantagePoint waypoint file(exported as magellan's own .GPX???) reliably to .CSV format? Again, I'm facing this road block because 4250 is not compatible with Vantagepoint, therefore one can't export directly to it through the USB connection.

Thanks

I'm sorry but I can't feel too sorry for you.

Nothing in ANY of Magellan's published information says, or even hints, that what you are trying to do is possible. Certainly it is not recommended.

You can't blame the manufacturer for YOU trying to make it do things it wasn't meant to do.

Sounds to me like you chose the wrong model GPS. Admit that and move on......to one you will be happier with. Somehow I have a feeling that you won't be totally happy regardless of what you get.
