Alert not appearing

I am a senior with a NUVI 850 and still learning about POI etc so may not understand how things work. I just returned from a short trip. I had uploaded several different POI folders using the latest Garmin POI loader. They all appeared in the Custom POI section for the NUVI. The rest areas along the interstate all showed an alert and sound. None of the others worked however. When I used the loader I used the manual setting and used a large enough figure for feet so they should have sounded. So maybe I just don't understand POI's but can any of the POI uploads be set manually to alert the user or just certain ones? How would I determine which can alert and which can not? Sorry if my description is vague but I am not that familar with the terminology.
Thanks for any help you can provide!

It's important to understand how the proximity alerts work on Garmin auto units.
The alerts do NOT function as a radius, but rather they function as an "along the road" alert.
In order to get an alert several things must be true.
1. You must set an alert either through information in the file or via POI Loader being run in Manual Mode and an alert being manually entered. (Sounds like you did this part correctly.)
2. Alerts must be enabled on your unit.(If you are getting the redlight alerts, then this should be okay.)
3. You must be traveling on the road on which the POI is located and traveling in the direction of the POI.
4. The POI must be sufficiently close to the road (typically 50 feet or less).

Alert not appearing
Thank you VERY much for that explanation. It explains a lot and clears up my confusion. I can see the reasoning but a radius designation would also be very interesting alerting you to a POI that maybe only say a 1/2 mile out of the way that one might want to consider checking out. Again, thanks for helping me understand just how the alerts work.
