NOTL - Jack vs experience

Well, the wife and I are off to Niagara-on-the-Lake for a little culture and R and R. We'll be using Jack to get us there...perhaps. When I programmed in the address of where we're staying, I used the simulation feature to see the suggested route. I'm in Cleveland, so I expected Jack to take us all the way on I-90 to Buffalo and then north on I-190 over the Lewiston Bridge and on to NOTL. But Jack had different thoughts. His suggested route is I-90 to I-79 in PA, head north, and follow Lake Erie (PA-5 east) up to I-190 and over the same bridge. I have Jack set for quickest, and I'm wondering if he really thinks that a two- or sometimes four-lane highway is faster than a 65 mph Interstate. He indicates that the travel time is 3 hours, 20 minutes, which is about a half hour shorter than we're used to. And no, I don't have toll road avoidance enabled.

Since we're in no rush, we're thinking about trying Jack's route just to see if it's really faster. We know it will be more scenic, and less expensive since we won't be on the NY Turnpike.

OK Jack, I hope you're up to the test!

Sometimes you just have to have faith in technology.
Let Jack take over and enjoy the ride.

In the back of my head I can hear:

"Open the Pod bay doors HAL"

I think "Karen" needs her voice changed to a Male, and he will be named "HAL"!

I second Miss POI

I applaud your "adventuresome-ness." By all means tell us how well Jack did.

:D

It could bring a new meaning to 'It's the journey, not the destination'. Good on ya!

:)

If you wind up in Mexico, then you know Jack has led you astray!!

We're back, and Jack did the trick.

Well, I am impressed. We headed out Friday morning, Jack on the dash and Mapquest and AAA map on the console. Our destination was Old Town, Niagara-on-the-Lake. My wife and I both thought that Jack was going to take us along I-90 in PA, then head north on I-79 to follow Lake Erie into NY. But boy were we wrong! Jack didn't say a word as we approached the exit to I-79. He then told us to keep left on I-90. OK, we'll follow his directions. We passed into NY and on to the infamous NYS Thruway. He then told us to continue 62 miles on I-90. OK, Jack. You're the boss. About 61 miles later Jack told us to exit at Rt. 179...not I-79! He then directed us to NY 5, also known as the Skyway. This bypass allowed us to avoid the Buffalo traffic, and connect with I-190 with minimal hassle.

The rest of the trip was uneventful, even though we didn't follow Jack's directions to the Lewiston-Queenston Bridge. He wasn't happy about that, but I'll be darned if we were going to wait two to three hours at that border crossing. We took the Rainbow Bridge instead, waiting a total of 20 minutes to get into Canada.

The trip home yesterday was incredibly fast, and this time there was no wait on the L-Q Bridge!

Note to anyone heasding into Canada through the Buffalo area - pay attention to the signs overhead on I-190. The Lewiston-Queenston crossing is always the busiest. If the sign syas there is a delay, there really is! Use another bridge!

Bottom line...Jack proved himself once again. As I said, I am impressed. Both Mapquest and AAA took us further into Buffalo on I-90 to pick up I-190. That would have added almost an hour to our trip!

Attaboy, Jack! Oh, and we had a wonderful time in Canada!

Nice to hear some praise

Nice to hear some praise for the Nuvi's routing abilities for a change. Your experience is more in keeping with my own. My 260 did a great of of routing us around urban areas on bypass roads on my trip from Ft. Myers FL to Denver CO last May. This week I"m off to Idaho... we'll see how it does on this trip. grin

Jack was Right

On our trip to Quebec City last weekend, I thought that Jack was going to mislead us. As we approching the City we were driving on eastside of the St. Lawrence River. Jack told us to keep going the way were going. I said to my wife I don't see a bridge to get over to the other side. But we followed Jacks words and when he finaly spoke, I new he was smarter than me. He said in a calm voice........
" Turn Left and get on the Ferry ". We both cracked up.

Vacation time

i am leaving from Atlanta, Ga to Destin Fl on Sunday for a week at the beach. I will use one of my Garmins ( right now it looks like the 680 has the job, as my 760 is being repaired by Garmin due to the 3.10 firm update- unless UPS delivers the unit today)
i am setting my GPS to Destin, but add in Georgiana as a waypoint. The reason for this is to force the GPS to go mostly on expressway , instead of going through phoenix city [the unit is set to the fastest route]

beach - here i come :>)
