Webupdater not identifying my 880 as connected to computer

I am not sure why this is so. I connected the unit to my laptop, and the Communicator test page said it was connected.

Then I tried to do as they said, have the unit on (it is listed in MyComputer as GarminNuvi E drive) And then I ran Webupdater.

It looks for devices connected and says it "found some devices," but none which would qualify for updating.

It did not recognize that a Nuvi 880 was plugged in and turned on, did not give me a chance to type in the unit description.

So do I have an option to install the latest update for my unit, if it needs it? There was an update showing for June 24, 2008, I think, and I took delivery of my unit on July 15.

What is happening here?

EDIT: I just downloaded to a folder on my desktop the new software for my 880. The file is nuvi880_280.exe
and the download page at Garmin DID NOT HAVE ANY INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS down there with the system requirements. The "about" for my unit, on the unit itself, shows in left column the SW VERSION: 2.50
and across from it in the right column is GPS SW VERSION: 2.60m

Since the Webupdater is not working, and there are no instructions on where to install this file to, where do I go from here?

i had some 3rd party maps not working with a 850 and garmin said its a totaly different op system than all their others so some things might not work on it.

The software updating is so totally basic to the operation of the device, that it just HAS TO WORK.
I know I'm not the first person to encounter this and there is a FIX out there.

Right? ......cross my fingers.....(thanks)
