what is map source ?

Mapsource

I got my copy from garmin, it came with my City Navigator North America NT 2009 update.

What is MapSource

MapSource is a PC based map program that allows you to create routes and other things on your PC and then download it to your GPS unit.

You can also use it to check specifically what is on the mapping program, such as streets and POI's.

It is from Garmin.

Mapsource

You can get MapSource without the maps for free by downloading the Garmin Training Center and updating the MapSource version.
Here is Motorcycle Mamas post of how to get Mapsource for free.
Step 1:
Download and Install "Garmin Training Center"
http://www8.garmin.com/support/collection.jsp?product=999-99...

Step 2:
Download and Install the latest Mapsource Update
http://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=209

It should be noted that the nuvi line does not come with MapSource. As has been noted, many people have gotten it for free from Garmin by politely asking and stating that they wish to use it to "manage their favorites".

Garmin says, "Not able to locate " Training Center link

I just clicked on the first link above, and it came up with "not able to locate." Being backwards anyway, I had already done Step 2 to no avail, since I have NO MAPS to load into the software. I'm hoping that is soon remedied with my order today for the CNNA NT 2009 disk. I had no trouble getting the MS software as a free download but it does nothing without a map.

They claim 3-5 day ground shipment, so we'll see when the map disk gets here.

The first link was broken, see ralphy1's correction.

Anyway, if you already have the 2009 map update downloaded from Garmin prior to installing Mapsource, then you already have the map on your computer! You don't need the disk.

Just run an extractor program (I use freeware 7-zip) to extract files from the 2009 download file rmu_cnnant2009.exe. In the extracted files, go to the msi folder. Then run CNNANT2009UpdateWeb_ENU.msi to install the 2009 map to your Mapsource.

Run Mapsource. It will challenge you for the 2009 map unlock code. You have this somewhere on your myGarmin page, if you had previously downloaded the 2009 map from Garmin. Enter the code and you're all set.

I am curious if Mapsource

I am curious if Mapsource will work in conjunction with the Garmin NUVI 200. My understanding is that the 200 does not support routes...?

Mapsource SHOULD work with your Nuvi 200

Even though the 200 doesn't support routes, you can use MapSource to manage your Favorites. That's where the true utility of the software comes in.

Just my opinion,

Joe

Ok thanks, I will check it

Ok thanks, I will check it out!!

My 880 came preloaded with the 2009 current map. I went to Garmin website to see if any updates were available for me, and they said NONE, and I could not download anything. So I do not have the file you speak of on my computer. That is why I asked Garmin for the disk. It isn't a freebe either. But without it, I am dead in the water with MapSource.

It's not a "freebie", but it CAN be

I got my most recent full version of MapSource by talking with the customer service reps at Garmin. In reading various postings on this site, you will NOT get the same answer from the different techs with whom you speak.

My suggestion is to call, and ALWAYS be polite, and ask about the MapSource disk that wasn't in your box. An OBVIOUS oversight when the box was packed as how could anyone presume to be able to manage favorites without this GREAT program (spread it on thick).

I got them to send me a disk for free not too terribly long ago, and they also threw in the shipping.

If you don't get the answer you want to hear from the first rep you speak with, thank them, tell them to have a great day, and say good-bye. Then call back and try again with another rep. Eventually you will get one that will agree to provide the disk for free - because the program should have been included in the first place.

Thanks! I will call Garmin..
