POI Sound during Navigation

Hello All...

New user of Garmin 780. I have POI's loaded for Home and Rest Areas. When I am not navigating a route, the POI is announced visually and with sound... However when I am actually navigating to a specific location, the POI is announced after the navigation is complete...

Is there a setting I am missing?

As I said, new user for last 2 weeks... Really enjoyed the unit so far!!

Thanks for your help!

I think Bob meant to give you a link that would give you some things to read about POI's and how they work.

POI's are generally silent... search / read FAQ and read about POI Loader and how alerts work.

My GPS gives all the usual directions and when I am several hundred feet away from my destination it says "Arriving at ............. On the left"

Not sure what is causing the post arrival announcement.

POI Alerts

Can you give an example of what's happening?

POI Example

Thanks for the quick replies!

In an effort to better understand the use of POI's and the tools, I created a CSV file with the coordinates of my driveway with an alert of My Home. I also used the graphic as well as an MP3 file to play a short 20 sec clip of music (all named exactly the same with the exception of the file extension)... (The site where I received the step by step instructions is http://home.comcast.net/~ghayman3/garmin.gps/)

I used the POI Loader program to upload the files to my GPS.... and for a test I drove about 1 mile from my home, turned on the GPS (no destination) and when I was within 1000 feet of my home the GPS sent an alert to the screen, displayed the ICON I had uploaded where my home is located, and played the 20 second clip... everything worked well and good...

However if I have actually set a destination (like to Home.. or anywhere...) If the GPS is actually navaigating to a location, none of the alerts heppen ... (for the home, I get the arrival message, followed immediately with the alert and mp3 file playing....) I have the same information for all of the Rest Areas... with a Rest Area ICON that pops up and a audible queue that a Rest Area is approaching. As long as I am not navigating to a specific location, all works fine.. however when I am entroute to a destination, none of it works....

The step by step instructions indicate that you have to set some one time configuration and gives examples for the Nuvi 650... however the options provided don't match the option on my 780.. and I can't find anything like those listed in the other configuration areas... specific instructions are posted below

=========================
Make sure that your Proximity Points Alert is turned on. On my nüvi 650, from the main menu I select 'Wrench' > Proximity Points > Alerts (select Change) and make sure that 'Custom POIs' is checked. I also, at the bottom of the same screen, select 'Audio' > choose 'Continuous - All Alerts' > OK (2) > Back (2).

Also, make sure that your Attention Tone is turned on: 'Wrench' > 'Navigation' > if Attention Tone reads 'Off' then change it by touching 'Off' and selecting 'On' in the next screen. Then OK > Back (2). If you have been using your device it will probably be set to 'On' already.

Depending upon your model, your nüvi may not be exactly like this but what you are doing is allowing Custom POIs to work and allowing Alerts to work.

I don't have the Audio selection or the Attention Tone as described on my 780. Not sure if this would correct the problem...

Again, thank you for you help!!!

Simulate

I don't believe that the lack of those settings is making any difference. If I understand correctly, in your test, you actually chose to navigate to the POI you were testing. I believe that could be the issue. Can you do a simulated ride PAST your house with a destination beyond it. Usually, you don't need an alert for a destination POI -- the unit is already prepared to announce it and perhaps the 780 can't handle both. Other units do it, but it sounds like a tiny 780-idiosyncrasy to me.

Don't drive it to test it, run a simulation. Gary's website walks you through running a simulation.

POI Sound during Navigation

I just saw this post and my 780 will not alert on rest areas or other custom POI's if I am in the navigation mode. I can't understand why Garmin would design something that operates like this or not catch this flaw in their testing.

Hmmm...

Win, is that true even if you are navigating to a distant destination and pass a Rest Area? Or is it only a problem when you pick that first Rest Area as a destination?

??

It's Monday and my brain isn't up to full speed. Can someone explain to me what the problem is?

If I'm reading correctly, the OP is trying to figure out why a POI alert isn't coming up when the POI is set as the final destination.

But if the POI is your final destination, why do you need an alert??

I'm confused.

If it's your final destination you do get an alert..

Arriving at blah blah on right...

POI Sound during Navigation

I live in a small town in Washington. It has 2 Micro breweries my 780 will alert for them in the map mode but if, I select Navigation say to home these alerts do not show up. I have also found this to be true about rest areas if I am in the navigation mode. Say if I am coming from Mount Vernon , Wa and am going to the Edmonds Ferry There are 2 rest areas on that route and neither alert. I know they will if I stop the route because I have tried that.

Thanks for clarifying. That sounds like a bug. Have you asked Garmin to check it as a possible bug?

780 POI Bug

To validate the issue, I configured a Redlight POI at a specific spot between my home and my work. The POI configuration has three files. The CSV file, the BMP file for the screen icon, and an mp3 file with a short 20 second clip. This will test all aspects of the POI... Alert Visual, Icon Visual and MP3 Audible. All are named exactly the same with the exception of the file extension.

This morning I used the navigation mode. I did not receive the visual on screen alert. I receive the audible 20 second mp3 file.

This evening I used the map mode. I received all three. The visual ALERT on the screen, the icon for the location, and the 20 second mp3 file...

This pretty much indicates that there is a bug in the way the 780 handles POI alerts in the navigation mode. I will contact Garmin Support for further assistance.

Thanks!
