An inconsistent bong...

During the past few months of owning my nüvi I have had proximity alert POIs for coffee shops set at 4000 ft. However, the bong-bong default alert seems to be inconsistent when it comes to pointing out an establishment well within that distance. Granted, at times it's a relief not to hear the alert because in some areas there seems to be a shop on every block.

I assume there is NOT a virtual 4000 ft. semi-circle in front of me while I am driving that is 'scanning' for POIs that meet my alert criteria. If that was the case there would be POIs way out on the wings of the search field that would set off the alert.

I've noticed that driving in one direction may trigger the bong (like driving to work) but driving the other direction (like driving home) will not trigger the bong, even though I know the POI is within that 4000 ft radius in both directions.

It almost seems like an algorithum is in place to account for speed and perhaps narrows the search field (say from 180° to 90°) because you're driving to fast to exit for the POI. smile

Or.... perhaps there is a breath sensor in place (perhaps next to the daylight sensor) in the back of my 200W that knows I've had too much caffeine and figures it's in my best interest to skip this stop. wink

I didn't realize they could work that kind of technology into such an inexpensive device. (insert yuks here)

Anybody else discover inconsistencies in their bong? Seriously? smile

The alerts do not function as a radius but rather as an "along the road" alert. You must be on the road on which the POI is located, traveling in the direction of the POI, and the POI coordinates must be sufficiently close to the road (typically 50 feet or less) in order for the alert to sound.
