Cross Country Road trip

Any one have any idea how long it takes and how much it costs?

I have not done this,

And, I am not a planner, however, I would think that this depends on many variables. A couple of questions I would ask are:
- how many will be going?
- how many states do you wish to visit?
- where is your starting location and the destination?
- what vehicle will you be driving? A large bus or camper will take much more fuel than a small hybrid vehicle.
- how much will you be stopping to eat, pulling over, resting for the night, etc?

An example is one group of three young men that completed a drive through all 48 continental United States in 106 hours. http://greatamericanroadtrip.us/

Packing a cooler of food would be less than stopping to eat, your gas mileage, hotel, tolls are a few of the variables that you'd need to be aware of.

Hopefully, this might help get an idea.

And now, back to your regularly scheduled forum - already in progress . . .

Cost

Not sure about the length of time it would take, but I did calculate the cost and it comes out close to One Buck Two Ninety Eight Fifty. This is of course +/_ a few cents.

I did a X-country trip

I did a X-country trip in mid-2006 that took me thru 33 states, 11,600 miles and we did it in 45 days.

At that time, average price I paid for gas was $2.81/gal and I averaged 27.4 mpg in a new Taurus V6. Basically I used about 425 gallons of fuel.
We only stayed 36 nights in motels - the rest of the nights were with family or friends.

Of course you can. Just quit your job and go. And have a good time. We'll talk to you when you get back.
Oh, yeah, one more thing. Make sure you've made reservations for coming back to the poor house. grin

Poor House

Exactly. I try to tell my nieces and nephews who are college age and slightly older that while I wouldn't trade my wife and kids for anything, they should try to experience as much as they can before they are in the position of having others rely on them. grin

done across conus

took around 800 bux and 3000 miles across from nyc to seattle in 4 days.
most spent on food/night lodging/gas but you can get by sleeping in yer car if you like.

All depends on the trip

Use mapsource and plan your route where you will be going. Take the mileage from there and divide it by how many mpg your vehicle gets and multiply it by the day's average gas price to get your fuel cost. Then add in a before and after oil change/tune up, how many day's you plan to do it in multiplied by the hotel cost (Motel6 ~$55), and food ~$20 per person per day. Plus any tourist stops you make add $ and extra time.

Don't forget, in winter many of the mountain passes close.

Cross Country Costs

There are a lot of variables in reporting the time and cost. My wife and I did a round trip from Washington DC to Fresno California spending 4 1/2 days on the road each way. As for the cost, it depends on where you stop for gas, how much you use, where you eat and most definitely where you sleep.

The route you take also has a lot to do with it, we went south along I-81 to Knoxville and then took I-40 to Barstow before heading north. Coming east, we went back to Barstow and then took I-15 north to I-70 to PA, then dropped down for I-68. 2800 miles in 4.5 days means averaging over 600 miles per day. That's a lot of time behind the wheel even changing drivers every couple of hours.
