What should I do with City Navigator NT North America 2009 DVD?

I had a Nuvi 680, and ordered the maps update disk from Garmin. Before receiving the disk, the unit had signal issues. Best Buy offered me Nuvi 780 instead (under their extended warranty, since they did not have 680 in stock. Needless to say that I gladly accepted their offer.

Then I received the update disk for the older unit. After registering 780 on Garmin's site, I ordered another disk from them (for FREE), and updated maps using the first disk. Now I have two DVDs sitting at home; first one used to update, and second one is factory sealed. I also understand that the activation code must be requested from their website, and is associated with the registered Garmin unit.

My question is whether the new disk without the activation code has any value at all? I mean, should I offer it on eBay and make enough for couple gallons of gas, or it's not even worth the time trying to create an auction? What would you do with this new disk? Make it an integral part of local landfill?

If I can get a code, I would

If I can get a code, I would like to buy the sealed disk. Not sure how much you are asking, but if you can sell it, just let me know.

Thanks

Would'ent the code only be

Would'ent the code only be good for his old Nuvi?

It's not associated with a unit. When you load it to your unit it will ask you for the product key, your gps must be connected, and at that time an unlock code will be generated for your unit. This is of course poviding that the product hasn't been previously used... The product key is provided with the disk...

I think there are two different DVD versions: A retail version that we get from the stores including activation key, and the other one sent by Garmin where the key has to be generated through their site for the registered unit. Even the cover art is different, but both are City Nav NT North America 2009. I have the later one. It only has a 10 digits alpha numeric serial number on the back, and comes shrink wrapped in a jewel case (just like a music CD). I am confused whether this sealed DVD without activation code (but all the locked data) is worth anything for anyone? Any insight?

your unopened

Your unopened copy is just fine and you can sell it or use it on another unit. The opened copy is no good to anyone but your unit it was installed onto. Save the disk and key code for safety sake.

It is just garbage

Your unopened disk is completely useless. Send it to me and I'll dispose of it properly by adding the maps to my GPS grin

Gosh, what an exciting offer :)

I think that I am getting a feel of the (lack of) usefulness of the sealed disk, and would love to take you up on your generous offer. I am sure that you wouldn't mind paying for a nominal shipping fee though.... I believe that it would be somewhere in the neighborhood of $40-$50 cool

.

I think that since you didn't pay for it, you should "pay it forward" and figure out some way to give it to someone rather than making money from it. Just my two cents.

to install the version without the unlock code...

When you unlock the map (you must be connected to the internet) you select that you don't have the 25 digit unlock code, as you follow the instructions you will be asked for the product key, when you insert the key you will be given the unlock code and it will unlock the maps...

Hey we live in a free enterprise capitalistic society - if one can profit from some good fortune, then go for it!

I couldn't agree more, except. Garmin sent the map update for a specific unit that was purchased with old maps. The free update met specific Garmin requirements. Since this map update will not be used in good faith for the purpose it was intended, any other use would be no less than stealing.

I see a big difference between free enterprise and taking advantage of Garmin for going out of their way to provide customer service.

If you havn't been, you will!

As a matter of fact, Garmin just this week showed me for the forth time how good their customer service can be. They went over and above what I expected on a map situation that was probably my fault.

Do you really think that if someone steals from you, that makes it okay to steal from someone else? If Garmin is that bad, there are other brands and models Bob.

Terry

Did you pay for your fix?

Oh, so you admitted messing up your maps, but yet took the fix that got you out of your situation instead of paying your good money to Garmin to fix your problem.
Was there really a difference?? I bet your going to make an excuse for you action!

What other kinds of GPS's are there?

I agree w/ MM. I received duplicate copy of NT 2008 last year. Since I didn't pay for it, I gave it to Guttermouth.

I didn't tell anything here that I didn't tell the Garmin service rep on the phone. I explained exactly what happened and Garmin customer service did what they can do well. They gave me excellent customer service.
Maybe it was because they felt I wasn't lying or trying to cheat them, I don't know. I do know there is nothing constructive going further down this rat hole.

Maybe we should call garmin

And ask if it's ok to sell or give away an unused update..... Maybe they don't care... I know I don't....

Bob,

I have to side with you in this. Garmin is a big business and they will let one keep it because it would cost Garmin more in overhead to receive it in and put it back into the system for resale or to reassign it for redistribution.
