New MapSource version (6.14.1) released today 7-18-2008

Doesn't look like changes that are really needed except maybe the option to select the route color, and maybe the interface for managing map products and unlock codes Have you thought about updating to this version?

.

I downloaded it and installed it just to see.

Here are my initial thoughts.

It has a completely different look in the maps than the previous versions.

I like that you can change the color of the routes. Very useful when you have multiple routes in a file.

The one thing that seems to be gone (or I just can't find it) is the ability to make the icons smaller. I like the small icon size, so this might be a problem for me.

The other thing that's changed is that the Viapoints have flag instead of a black square. The black square seems to be gone. Not sure I'm liking the flags.

Here's a screen shot.

Thanks for the heads up!

Thank you!

MapSource says it's up to date

Funny, the Help/check for updates in MapSource says it is up to date. Thanks for the link, it's downloading now.

At least with the flags, it should match what I see in my Nuvi. Via points always show flags on the Nuvi. We had a long but inconclusive thread a while back on this.

Hmm, it has hung twice on downloading a small test route. I have a bunch of other stuff running at the same time. I'll reboot when finished before passing judgement on this.

.

The update tool inside MapSource hasn't worked for SEVERAL versions. They should just take it out.

I haven't had any operational problems with it.

MM thanks for the good review of the latest updates it was very understandable and liked the screenshot. Think I will go ahead and download it.

* Updated map rendering to provide visual improvements.

The map looks good now with the latest version, mostly in par with other map software out there, but at the cost of a big peformance hit when its redrawing the map when you zoom in and out or move around.

Dragging the map view is much better

It always annoyed me how the screen used to sort of blank out when you dragged the map view around. It was really bad when you were zoomed way out and were looking at a really large area.

I like the new way that this works with the update. I also like the flags on via points. Makes it easy to tell the difference between via points that I set vs route points that were set by the routing engine.

I agree with MM, I don't like not having the option to set the size of POI icons. I usually have them turned off when working with routes, anyway, though.

New MapSource Update

This update applies to MapSource TOPO only

.

Nope, that note applies to the update to Topo within that section. This update link is right below that section.

Confusing Download Page

There are actually 2 downloads available on this page. One is the TOPO update and one is a link to the new Mapsource version. Be sure to click the link that shows 48.45 MB.

The page is a bit confusing.

Just installed the update

Just installed the update and agree with some of the others. Map looks better but is considerably slower on my machine and the icons for waypoints are way too big for my taste.
Guess I'll just have to get used to it unless someone finds a way to make them smaller.
I usually display symbol and name and the name is also way too big. It's already in a box so why not the same size as the base map font?

Yeah, I'm going to try it for a few days, but I might go back to the previous version. The icon size is a killer for me.

Mapsource Update & (Ontario maps)

I just installed the update, everything seemed to go okay until I told it to launch...

I have Toponav Southern Ontario maps installed which ran fine for the last eight months, an error window came up saying there was a problem with the southern Ontario map installation, I must reinstall the map.

I reinstalled the map, same error. (tried this twice)

Luckily I was able to go back to ver. 6.13.7

I will try Garmin help on Monday but I don't think I will get very far, 3rd party maps!!

Manual rout modification behavior

Modifying the rout seems to be more difficult for me with this version. When I create a rout in Mapsource to go from point A to point B, the rout is created as expected. However, if I try to select the rout to 'rubber band drag' the rout to a new location, I can only select the rout 'sometimes'. Occasionally I am able to select the rout but it will not 'grab' the rout to move it. Even more rarely I am able to grab the rout and it will then modify the rout with a rubber band as in the previous version. But more often than not, I am not able to select the rout. This is confounding to me and I am curious if anyone else has noticed this behavior. Definitely the previous version was more consistant in this behavior.
Has anyone elese observed this behavior?

Click and Hold

I have had more consistent luck if I left-click the route and hold the button down for several seconds. When I release the mouse button after holding it down for a few seconds, the "rubber band" appears.

Does the old version of MapSource need to be uninstalled before I install the new version, or can I install the new version directly over the old version?

H Hannah, how did you revert back to v. 6.13.7? I've also got the Philippines maps from this forum and when I hit launch after installing v. 6.14.1 I'm getting an error msg saying "problem with PhilRout installation, re-install PhilRout and then open MapSource." I assume PhilRout refers to the Philippines maps.

Manual rout modification

I've tried the 'click and hold' as you have dicribed but haven't had consistant success. This is such a fundamental capability that I am somewhat puzzled with how this could be released like this. Some of the other things that have changed that are issues for others could be argued as being in conflict with theire persoanl preference. But I find it difficult to believe this is one of them.

Unless there is a more reliable method to select the rout and add via points manually, this is going to be a deal breaker for me with this version.
Any other ideas out there in the ether?

.

You don't have to uninstall a previous version before installing this version.

You can revert back to a previous MapSource version by just reinstalling that version.

Previous versions can be found at
http://www.gpsinformation.org/perry/msource/

You can uninstall a MAP from MapSource by going to "Add/Remove Programs" on your Windows Control Panel.

There have been reported issues with non-Garmin Custom Maps.

I agree the the "rubber-band" function is a little wonky now. It works, but it's fidgety.

Manual rout modification

I have worked this issue a bit more and I MAY have found a work around that works for me. It seems that I have more consistant luck selecting the route if I select the route by clicking and draging a SMALL window(about the width of the route trace) crossing the route with the first point being on or very near the route. I am then able to select the route for 'rubber band' modification if I select the point I wish to move by dragging another SMALL window, again with the first point on or very near the route. This is still not bullet proof, but does work better for me. I may continue to evaluate this a bit more before I bail out to the previous version and wait for the next version.

MM, I tried using the

MM,

I tried using the MapSource file ver. 6.13 to get back from ver6.14but that also failed to work. For whatever reason.

So I used yesterdays system restore point. That worked.

As for using Control Panel to remove maps from MapSource that won't work because the Philippine Map is not one of the maps listed in the Add or Remove Programs in the Control Panel. I guess it's because it's another vender map.

Thanks

Thanks, MM, for the note that the "Check for Updates" isn't the way to confirm that I have the latest Mapsource update.

Thanks also to all who mention slower redrawing with this version. I have a several year old WinXP PC and I definitely notice the slowdown.

I will keep and use this latest update, and mostly for a single reason: when using Garmin's Topo USA 2008 (or the free "1:24K detail" Arizona topo: http://www.gpsfiledepot.com/maps/view/1/ ), I see that roads are much better seen. With the two topo maps that I use, Garmin and home-made, I found that the very faint road marking on the maps were difficult to see with the older Mapsource--contour lines and everything else were much more prominant than the roads with it. With this new Mapsource update, roads on my two Topo maps are much more obvious.

Thanks

MM and H Hannah,

Many thanks for your suggestions on reverting back, I will try to get back to v. 6.13.7.

I had the same problem

You have to use regedit:

HKEY_lOCAL_MACHINE>SOFTWARE>GARMIN>MAPSOURCE>FAMILIES>
Delete the PhilRout folder...

Mapsource will then run...

if you want you can then delete the the folder from your hard drive, I don't remember the folders name but it has the phillipine maps in it...

I just tried re-running the Philippines map again and MapSource once again wouldn't start..

BTW The folder with the maps is c/jklinc if it's installed to the default location. Deleting it alone will not solve the problem. It has to be deleted from the registry. Re-installing mapsource also will not solve the problem as long as the PhilRout folder is in the registry.

Finally, ran system restore and got the old version back...now Mapsource opens. I won't try that again.

aophiuchus, thank you for that solution for this problem. I had already reverted back to v. 6.13.7 using H H's suggestion to restore my computer to an earlier set point and that worked out for me. Will hold off on this latest version to see if it's worthwhile to update to.

Because I had changed the registry I couldn't use restore.....

But I was able to use MM's solution after deleting the file from the registry and then reinstalling the phillipines map... Long way around, but it got me where I want to be.... rolleyes

Edit: But if you do want to use the new version, you will have to modify the registry to get rid of the phillipines map...

Guess I'll downgrade, too

I don't mind the flags or larger icons, and the screen refresh is just fine on my laptop. It's fairly new and reasonable powerful.

But the rubber-banding is just plain broken. WAY too much clicking and trying different spots on the route to get the rubber band going.

Guess I'll downgrade, too

Have you tried to change I was looking and it still gave me the option to have different size icons. Not able to move the route though.

I'm hoping that Garmin will get enough feedback on these issues to change them very soon.

Will downgrade too.

I agree. This version is broken in several areas. In addition to the rubber band feature being broken, the issue with the icon size is further broken in that the help file indicates that the option to change the size of the icons should exist. Yet it doesn't. This is just plain sloppy work. This also makes one wonder what else is not right. This latest release is a Beta version at best. There is no way that this version should have been released in its present form. Apparently writing PC software is not one of Garmin's core competencies. They seem to make fairly good hardware and their firmware is adequate, but if they hope to maintain their prominence in the PND business, they had better step up a bit in the PC/MAC software category. Mapsource in general is a good idea but it is not implemented very well and this latest version is another strike against it. I WANT a PC software that works with my PND, I NEED a PC software that works with my PND. Mapsource does this in the strictest sense, but it is quirky and too far different with it's user interface from other mapping programs that I feel I HAVE to use it rather than I WANT to use it. I would much rather use a different mapping program. As the PND business matures, my opinion is that the hardware will become less important and the company that can master the PC software will be the winner.

MapSource Upgrade

Hi All,

I’m having issues with the new MapSource version 6.14.1. Before the upgrade all seemed fine to me but now I’m having problems with importing Routes. It just wont always import even if shows it does there is nothing in “my data” folder to import.

Before I go and roll back to version 6.13 I was wondering if someone else experienced this or maybe has a fix.

Thanks!

I cannot even update my Mapsource. When I execute the update, all goes well until I try to open Mapsource. I then get an error message telling me I have a problem with "Product 2". I have uninstalled and reinstalled Mapsource and then tried the update with the same negative results. I have reverted back to my old version. Any ideas???

Do you have any non garmin maps installed?

The icon size is a killer to me also. Everyone please write to support@garmin.com and ask for it to be added back! below is the note I sent:

Symbol size is missing with the new MapSource 6.14.1. The previous version, MapSouce 6.13.7, had a symbol size pull down menu under Edit--> Preferences--> Symbol Size --> Small or Large. The large icon size is just not usable when looking at down town Manhattan. All one can see is icons and no roads. The small icons work fine for NYC. Could you please add the Symbol Size back to the next version of MapSource. Until it's added the new version of MapSource is worthless for those going to NYC.

I am also very glad that this site is here. My decision to update at this time has been made - and it's NO WAY. I do beta test for my marine system, and there are benefits to my relationship with that company (hardware, advanced versions of software - even if it's buggy, etc.). As I have no relationship with Garmin (other than being a customer), I'd rather not do the beta thing with them.

Thanks again for being here POI Factory,
