Nuvi 350 proximity alerts play repeatedly even with "Single Tone" selected ...

The Nuvi 350, for both the normal (non-Tourguide) proximity alerts and Tourguide proximity alerts, plays the associated MP3 file at least 4 times, and not necessariy back to back, before it finally quits. Very annoying. These are NOT speed alerts, only proximity alerts. I have "Single Tone" checked, however this seems to have no effect. I was hoping that both the "on route" proximity alerts as well as the Tourguide alerts would only sound once. So, a proximity alert of "Rest Stop 1 mile ahead" plays when I'm 1 mile away, .9 miles away, .8 miles away, .4 miles away, you get the point. By then, I'm not 1 mile away anymore. Sure, I could change it to "Rest Stop ahead", but that's not the point. "Single-Tone" should mean just that. Seems like a bug to me.

I've seen this mentioned by a few others, but haven't seen any meaningful workarounds with the exception of adding a trailing blank segment to the MP3 alert file. I'm concerned about that cutting into normal TTS turn-by-turn directions.

I'm considering removing the MP3 files completely and just hoping the red alert bar will catch my eye. But the MP3 alerts sounding once would be much nicer.

Has anyone found a resolution for this? How do others deal with this?

Thanks!

Eliminating MP3 alerts

Eliminating the mp3 files does not mean you have no audio alert. There are default bongs that will alert you to look at the red bar.

As far as it being a bug, you may be correct, or it may only apply to the default alerts.

As for possibly missing navigation directions if you add dead air, I don't know with a certainty, but navigation is supposed to take precedence; if you set up a simulated test of this, please report the results.

Are Garmin 350 Alert issues also on the 360?

Do these same alert problems exist on the Garmin Nuvi 360, which is very simlar to the Nuvi 350?

I have not played much with my alerts, but may begin soon, with files from here which will take advantage of them.

Looking forward to others' experiences.

Thanks

That's the way my 660 works.

That's the way my 660 works. I have an audio alert file loaded with the highway rest area POI file. When I loaded the file with POI Loader, I set the alert distance for 2 miles.

With that setup, the audio alert plays 4 times, beginning 2 miles before the rest area, until I have passed the rest area. Yes, its a little annoying, but other than playing with "dead air" or reducing the alert distance to something less than 2 miles, there is no option or preference in the nuvi that the user can set to change this behavior.

Its that way by design. I don't think Garmin views this as a "bug."

Gary,
If it is by design, what is your take on the purpose of the alert setting options of "Single Tone", "Continuous-Speed Alerts", and "Continuous-All Alerts". As I mentioned before, I wonder whether these might work for the default sounds but not the mp3s.

The Zumo doesn't have that option, but that's my take on it as well. My guess is that those options are for the default sounds only.

My Nuvi 370 works the same way. Keeps alerting until I am past the position.

And . . .

And that is in spite of using the default audio alert and an audio alert setting of "Single Tone"?

I'm afraid you might be

I'm afraid you might be right about the "Single-Tone", "Continuous-Speed Alerts" and "Continuous-All Alerts" being only for the default tones. There's really no other explanation. I changed that setting and tried all 3 with both "on route" alerts and TourGuide alerts and it didn't change a thing no matter setting I used. It's either for the default tones only, or it's a bug.

So, someone tell me I'm wrong here, but TourGuide points only work with a valid MP3 file, right? I removed the MP3 file and compiled with POI Loader, but they didn't work without the MP3 file. If that's the case, there's no way to use TourGuide files with any kind of standard "tone". It's MP3 or nothing? Something doesn't seem right about that to me.

Someone correct me. I'd love to be wrong about that. But what I'd really like is to find a way to make those MP3 files play only once. I love the feature, just not how it executes.

Thanks!

I appreciate your replies

Thanks!

Wow! as a matter of fact I just checked my settings and I was on continuous - All Alerts. I have now changed it to Continuous - Speed Alerts and I will see what happens the next time I am out. Thanks bentbiker for the tip.

I haven't really had much

I haven't really had much need of POI's yet, so my experience is only with running simulated trips, but I have only seen it sound once with the 'single-tone' setting on. I am using a 350 as well.

how about the 760 i put

how about the 760 i put loaded the poi files and the voice thru the poi loader how do i get the alert to work when i pass by and alert i get nothing

.

Did you SET alerts? Regular Custom POIs don't alert by default.

thanks for the reply how do

thanks for the reply how do i do that?

Here is a post by MM that should answer your question...

Hmmm that didn't really answer your question, when you run poi loader use manual instead of express mode then set the distance or speed as desired... If you don't follow me come back with questions...

Regular Custom POIs don't alert by default.

You must set an alert if you want an alert to sound. You can run POI Loader in Manual Mode and set whatever alerts you want. Or you can put some alert information in the files themselves.

Check out Phil's great guide for more information about alerts.

Hornbyp's guide to setting alerts with POI Loader

Also, be aware that alerts will only sound if you are on the road on which the POI is located, traveling in the direction of the POI, and if the POI is located sufficiently close to the road (typically 50 feet).
