European maps

We are planning a trip to England and Hertz charges about 165 dollars a week for their GPS system. I can get the Garmin maps of Europe for $150. My question is, how does that work? Do you put the maps on an SD card or do they overwrite your US maps and then would you have to put your US maps back on.

SD Card

You will not overwrite the US Maps. Either buy the SD Card which can be sold in the future or the DVD card and load it to an SD card but the DVD will only be for that specific Garmin unit.

Get MapSource DVD

Get the MapSource DVD instead of the SD card! It is quite simple:

1. Get the DVD and unlock code for your GPS from Garmin.
2. Download latest MapSource software from Garmin and install it then the map DVD to your PC.
3. Enter the unlock code in the Mapsource and put a 2 GB or larger SD card to the reader (not your unit as it is a slower than a USB 2.0 reader).
4. Highlight the entire map from MapSource window and export it, the software will find the SD card.
5. Insert the card to the GPS and both internal and SD card maps can be activated at the same time.

You can browse the map on your PC and it is a lot better to plan your route that way. You can also use nRoute on your laptop if you have a GPS receiver.

If you need to switch

If you need to switch between North American and European maps you may need to get the European map on SD card if your Nuvi does have enough memory to hold both. For example I know the Nuvi 200 does not have enough memory to hold both while say the Nuvi 370 comes with both North America and Europe.

Another option if you have less memory on your Nuvi is to just send the area/countries you plan to visit no all of Europe.

Multiple SD Cards

I have Canada and Alaska on one SD card and plan to put Europe on a second SD card. That way I can just exchange cards when I cross the Atlantic.
