Mp3 Alerts and Mp3 Player Clashing?

I am using a Nuvi 350 which I have had since October (and absolutely love). I only recently found out about these POI alerts and such.

Here's what is going on. To practice this I created a 'Redlight' type proximity alert for my house that would alert me when I passed near home and play a mp3 file, etc.

Everything is working fine except if I am using the mp3 player on the unit at the time. It brings up the alert, but does not play the associated alert mp3 file. It seems that it even skips the track on my playlist. I'm wondering if this is because the Mp3 player is already in use, so the unit can't play the alert sound. Has anyone else experienced this or can they confirm/explain what is going on?

I may have answered my own question here. From http://www.poi-factory.com/node/13413 :

If you are using the built-in audio alerts for the redlights, no problem. If you are using a custom mp3 alert, there is a bug that will cause mixups when both are trying to play. There certainly is no problem putting mp3's on the card.

but I'd still like confirmation that this is what is going on. Is there a way around this if so? Using a different format of audio or something?

Well Known Bug

You will find many postings of this bug and numerous advisories that Garmin is either unaware of the problem or working hard on it, depending upon whom you talk to at Garmin.

Have you tried using a wav file instead of an mp3? I think everyone who has tried it has reported success using this solution.

I Second bentbiker

As bentbiker said, this has been a known problem for some time. I followed the suggestions here, converted my mp3 alerts to wav files and loaded them on my 660 with POI Loader 2.5.2 and the SOX.EXE file installed.

I can confirm that the audio alert files loaded in wav format no longer cause my mp3 player to skip ahead. The song pauses while the audio alert plays and then resumes right where it left off.

No, I haven't tried WAV. As I said, I'm very new at this and I got the impression looking around here that WAV wouldn't work.

I'll try that then. Thank you both.

How hard is it to convert a mp3 to a wav file and then reload it as your audio alert?

Very easy to do

Just try to look for free converter then rename as like it before but the extension is .wav intead .mp3

Is there something special I need to do in order to use the WAV file?

I've tried it, but it doesn't seem to be loading the file. The alert comes up, but only with the double-tone sound. All files are named the same (My_House_Redlight.csv, My_House_Redlight.bmp, My_House_Redlight.wav) and the SOX program is in the same folder as the POI Loader program.

I had nuvi 360 but have not try it yet.

I did convert it but have not load to test but I wonder if it works on all nuvi or certain one. Post what kind of model nuvi you have so others who try it will let us know. When I do mine I will post here to let everyone know work or not.

Nuvi 350

Nuvi 350 - It is in my first post.

WAV format

Does POI loader pull in the WAV files just the same as it does with MP# when the names are the same?

two ideas

Did you catch Gary's very specific mention of the version of POI Loader that is required -- 2.5.2? Also, the wav file must be mono, not stereo.

Version

I just downloaded the POI Loader program a couple of days ago - double checking it is version 2.5.2.0 (not sure if the extra 0 indicates a different version than you're mentioning or not).

I double checked the wav file as well and it's stats are: 256kbps bit rate, 16 bit sample rate, 1 channel (so it is mono), sample rate 16 kHz, and format PCM. It has a 2 second length.

Solved It!

I figured it out. The issue was with the version of SOX. The new version in the sox-win.zip file does not work correctly. I had been trying to get an older version, but couldn't find anything I wouldn't have to compile and I don't have a compiler.

Hornbyp provided a link (http://downloads.sourceforge.net/sox/sox12177.zip?modtime=11...) in this thread: http://www.poi-factory.com/node/13429?page=1 to an older version. It is working with that one.

Thanks to everybody for their help with this.
