RestAreasCombined - No Alerts

OK. So I added coordinates to the RestAreaCombined.csv file, converted RestAreasCombined.mpg to WAV, copied a BMP file and renamed it RestAreasCombined, installed sox.exe and then used POI Loaded to load successful.
I did a manual load onto GPS, selected Miles & Feet.
Unfortunately I am not getting ANY notification that I went by these coordinates. I set distance to 11111 feet.

Do I need to RENAME RestAreasCombined.csv to
RestAreasCombined_Redlight.csv in order to get an alert?

I went into Proximity Alerts and made sure that
Custom POIs has a checkmark next to it.
I have a Nuvi 260 and can not figure out WHY
I am not getting any alerts/warning.
I double checked coordinates so that is definetly
not it. Any help?

one thing that is weird

One thing that I thought was strange in the csv
file was that all the numbers in the first row
start with a - (negative sign). My coordinates from the Nuvi stated it was 80.69643 so I put that into the first row as -80.69643

if you are in north america

there should be a minus sigh preceding the first entry

What were both sets of numbers? I'd like to see where it is located.

Try this - For the alerts to work the way you expect, the file names must all be the same and contain the word TourGuide (as typed) and located in the same folder on your PC.

example:
TourGuide US RestAreas.csv
TourGuide US RestAreas.wav
TourGuide US RestAreas.bmp

Hi YankeeRedneck,

Two thoughts:
I think setting an "alert" at 11111 feet (approx. 21 miles) is just a little too far?

Also, if you're using .wav files for alerts, in order for them to work (I use them and they do work), they have to be encoded "mono" and not "stereo".
(I use the .wav files as a workaround to the .mp3 skipping issue with Garmin's Firmware v4.4.0)

See my 7/09/08 post here:

alert

11111 is a lot closer to 2 miles than 21. There are 5280 feet in a mile.

I also have trouble getting the alerts to work on rest areas. My gps is a 660. It seems that the alert only goes off if I have the rest area as a stop on my route.

2.1 miles

Dear Spin,

I also set my rest area alert for 11111 feet. Two and one-tenth miles gives me about the right amount of time to move to the proper lane in an unhurried way.

It also gives me time to contemplate how far the following rest stop may lie ahead and do I really want to wait that long.

Dear epc,

Thank you. I see we were writing our replies at the same time.

example:
TourGuide US RestAreas.csv
TourGuide US RestAreas.wav
TourGuide US RestAreas.bmp

OK. NOW I am really confused. I thought that the file name should contain the word 'Redlight' so I renamed all the files to:

RestArea_Redlight.csv
RestArea_Redlight.bmp
RestArea_Redlight.wav

I read on another sight that it HAD to contain the
word 'Redlight'. Now you are telling me it has to
contain the word 'TourGuide'.

Can somebody please confirm this for me?
Is TourGuide indeed a keyword in the file name
that would give me these results? I also noticed
that the word TourGuide was not concatenated with an
underscore. Is that correct?

Like I said, I am not getting either visual (bmp)
or acoustical (wav) warnings.

This is from another post on this website.

First of all, TourGuides only work on units that have an MP3 player.

You can get information about TourGuides from the POI Loader Help File.

Here's a brief description.

TourGuide is a feature available on compatible Garmin devices. TourGuide files include Custom POIs with descriptive .mp3 audio files. When you approach a TourGuide point, the .mp3 file plays and provides you with information about that point, much like a guided tour. TourGuide files must be saved as .gpx files.
-------------------------------------------------
I dont think tour guide is the way to go because:
1) my nuvi 260 does not play mp3 files.
2) i am not using/reating gpx files

?

Can we step back and ask why you added coordinates to the file? Did you want to add a test site or something? If so, do you realize you can simulate a route without actually traveling there? I'd suggest trying to load the original file before adding another variable by editing it.

Are you getting any indication that the POIs have been loaded when POI finishes? If yes, do you see the POIs listed under Custom-POIs? If yes, what do you see when you select a POI and choose the "Map" or "Show Map" button?

Addition of the word "redlight" automatically adds a proximity alert at a distance of 1/4 mile. If you are setting alerts manually, there is no reason to add the keyword "redlight". I presume you are using the word TourGuide to create a proximity alert that is radial instead of along-the-route?

Well, I wanted to make sure the POI alerts work before I went on a trip so I put one line of coordinates into the file that coincides with the coordinates of my workplace. If I use the simulation mode on the 260 does it alert BOTH visually & wav sound?

Do not presume I am using TourGuide. I have not named any of my files using this word. I only mentioned it in my post because a previous poster (see above) told me to do it.

I did get a successful message stating that 1800 + custom POI's have been loaded. I checked the POI's on the GPS and they do appear under WHERE TO > EXTRAS > CUSTOM POIS. An example of info in one of these POIS is:
Alert Information
Distance: 11112ft
Speed:none

If I select one of the rest area POI's and show map it is showing the bmp as an alert........
