Is OverCharging Bad? (Garmin c530)

I've heard that Garmin Streetpilots have touchy batteries.

Is it bad to charge the Garmin c530 when its not actually dead?

Sometimes I plug it in the car when driving even though its not totally dead. Othertimes like today im working on POIs so ive left it connected to the computer (which charges it) all day long, and it was already at full battery power.

Anyone know for sure? Thanks.

NO problem.

We just had a BIG battery discussion here a few days ago. Did you miss it?

Yeah, this one?

Actually, I did miss it. I wasn't here, just joined this site yesterday. However, I used the search feature and I saw this one, but it was about the Nuvi. And its more about draining. I'm interested in Overcharging risks.

Are you suggesting that StreetPilot Batteries are the same for sure?

EDIT: I on the following website that Li-on Batteries (which i think are in c530s) can't be overcharged, so go ahead and leave it the charger all the time if you really want.

Yes, I am "suggesting" that but don't know for sure.

I'm also suggesting that, using the proper charging equipment (supplied with the device or exact replacement) it is almost impossible to damage a Li-I battery by charging it too long.

I don't think it's the battery that's touchy - just the control software!. In common, with a lot of devices, you never actually switch them off - at the very least, the circuitry that detects the momentary press of the on/off switch is alive. There was a firmware change to this, about 12 months ago. You used to be able to give the button a quick tap and it would power on - now you have to hold it in.

Just occasionally, the C5xx locks up and needs to have the battery disconnected to get it to come back to life. It's not the end of the world though - the case comes apart easily enough.

Battery Discussion

The battery discussion on this forum was indeed very informative.

I am not certain however most people can determine what type of battery they have in their GPS or other electronics.

Battery technology has evolved over the years and it was great to see the hams and others with the proper background checking-in to offer much needed information. Thanks.
