car locator feature

I have a Garmin 780 which is suppose to locate my car after I have removed the GPS unit from its mount. How do I use this feature?

Last Position

If it works like my 750, the “Last Position” would appear in your favorites.

Example: I'm home and its on my bean bag. When I remove the 750 from the bean bag is shows Last Position in my Favorites.

Try it out, see if works for you.

I haven't had to use the feature. I believe that it will be found in your favorites shown as "last position". Just click "go" or look at the map. I'm sure some people might need to change from automobile to pedestrian to facilitate the journey. Also I think the verbage then goes to "walk" instead of "drive to" smile

On the 760..

When you get to your location while the gps is still on and connected to power, if you remove it from the cradle with the power still on it will mark the spot that yor are located......

I would just set it to off-road. So, you would get a straight line. I don't think that the garmin maps will map out all parking spots. "Walk 10 Slots, then turn Right." "Walk 2 Slots, Car on Right." laugh out loud

Does the unit have to stay on the entire time you are away from the vehicle?

Once you remove it from the cradle you can shut it off. smile

pedestren mode measures in feet

set your garmin from automobile to pedestren mode

could've used it last week

when i lost the car for about 20 minutes after coming out the wrong exit at the mall ...

Off Road

Much more important is that you switch to "Off Road" mode if you are dealing with a parking lot.

With your nuvi 350, perhaps this would help.

Similar solution for low end units

I don't have a unit with this function. But my low end unit is able to save the current location with a name in its address book. I name it "My Car" and later make it the destination to go to. That often does the same trick (close enough).

that's what i ultimately did

after stubbornly wandering around for 15 minutes ("it's gotta be just over here ...") i turned on the gps and selected from the top of the list of "recent selections".

Yes, it uses "Walk 100 feet.." instead of drive .2 miles or whatever.

On my 880 Nuvi, I tried it out today. Removed the cradle with unit on. Then I turned it off. Later I found LAST LOCATION under Favorites/All Favorites/Last Position. It was at the top of the list because it was closer to me than my destination favorite. I put it in PEDESTRIAN mode, for using offroad, I think, could still be using a vehicle. Haven't tested that, because neither this unit nor myself is going hiking on road OR offroad.

I would like to try this again in a large parking lot where I would intentionally walk beyond the car, and see if it "recalculates" or otherwise tells me to make a u-turn or what.

Found the car!

I just tried it at the airport and it worked great! I couldn't remember which garage I parked in, what level, or the space. It took me down the hall, up one escalator and down another, then to the correct elevator showing the hallways in 3D. It even re-routed when I made a detour to go to the bathroom. Once in the elevator it said, "push button for level 4." When the doors opened on level 4 it said, "walk 150 feet straight ahead, then turn left, go down three rows to row 4C and turn right, stay to the right of the row of vehicles." Then it said, "car is 14th car on the right, across from the black Hummer, between the green Ford F150 and the silver Toyota Camry."

And there is was. I love this feature. Later today, I'm going to use it to locate my car keys, reading glasses, and my TV remote. I will report back.
