Map Updates

Ok. some of you may have seen my posts about custom maps.....
I am not really getting anywhere with that and have another question.
How do the garmin maps get their updates?
If some of you have read my prior posts I'm wanting to try out the GPS technology on the volunteer ambulance service I belong too. However, the Garmin map I have "City Navigator North America NT 2009 - City Navigator Lower 48 States NT 2009" does not show my counties E911 street names. Our county has been E911 mapped for several years and when I look at the surronding counties their E911 streets are on the 2009 map.
Just trying to understand how the update process works. How does it trickle into showing up on a Garmin map.

Garmin gets it's map data from Navteq. It then takes that information and issues updates to its map products once per year. The City Navigator North America map v2009 was released this spring. The next one will likely get released next spring.
It can take 3-5 years (sometimes longer) for streets to make it onto the maps.
The best thing to do is to report it directly to Navteq using their MapReporter tool.
Note, however, that the maps may never have the particular street names that you are looking for. Navteq has their protocol based upon their data.

Do all retail gps units us navteq as the map provider?
May I have a different out come if I were to go to TomTom or Magellan?

TomTom gets its maps from TeleAtlas. Magellan, I'm not 100 percent sure since they don't update their maps very often.
