Anyone using Legend HCx for in-car navigation?

Hello!

I'm wondering if anyone here is using a Legend HCx (or similar models such as the Vista HCx) to navigate in their cars?

I currently have Canada Topo v2 in my receiver and find it decent, however I am eyeing City Navigator to add to it.

I think that it might be a good investment to use the Legend HCx since i've already purchased the receiver and learned how to use it, and that I spend most of my time outdoors on the trail.

Some people think that it might be a better deal to just shell out the additional money and just get a car GPS such as the Nuvi models, rather than upgrading the Legend HCx with City Navigator.

Any thoughts?

Thanks!

I think nuvi for the following reason(s)

Two thoughts:

First, you won't be spending the $60USD-ish price for the update CNNT 2009 map since you currently don't have an earlier version on your eTrex, but will need to spring for the fullblown City Navigator NT 2009 at about $80USD (plus a SD card, unless the eTrex has enough internal memory to hold the entire City Navigator in memory which I doubt). Compared to a new nuvi that arrives with the new 2009 North America map already installed, the extra cost for a 2nd device, compared to a map and SD card purchase for your current GPS, may be less than some would think.

Second, for hiking or walking with City Navigator, the eTrex sounds fairly OK to me, but if you plan to use it for autombile guidance, the larger screen on the nuvis and the voice prompts make a nuvi almost essential--in my opinion...

Good luck deciding.

Hi Craig, Thanks for your

Hi Craig,

Thanks for your thoughts. I don't really need the voice prompts and larger screen to be honest, so I might be happy with CNNT 2009.

If I understand correctly, adding CNNT 2009 to my unit will add the "address lookup" feature, which looks very useful. The supplied POIs can also come in handy in cities I don't visit often.

I already threw a 2 GB MicroSd card into the unit (so I could add the Ibycus topo maps), so the purchase would be limited to CNNT 2009 only.

Sounds like I already have my mind made up, eh? wink
