Convert .wav file to a .mp3

I have a .wav file for one of my custom poi's. I'm wondering how do I convert it to a .mp3 so I can instal lit on my unit so it is associated with a custom poi.

?

If you're using POILoader V2.5.2, then you shouldn't need to - it should work as a .wav file.

Otherwise, the Windows Sound Recorder can convert .wav to .mp3 on Windows XP (I don't think the Vista one can).

Convert .wav file to a .mp3

You can also use any audio editing application to convert. Simply open the .wav file and choose to save it as an .mp3.

itunes

itunes will do it.

Audacity is a free audio

Audacity is a free audio editor that is available on the internet. It seems to be a well received program for editing (converting among other tasks such as cutting, pasting and increasing volume)sound files.

Audacity does the job

I use Audacity for that. Click on "File", open the .wav file to be converted, then click on "File" and "Export as MP3". The first time (and only the first time) that you use this function, you will be asked to locate "lame_enc.dll". If you do not have this DLL, see this link for download and instructions.
http://audacity.sourceforge.net/help/faq?s=install&item=lame...
After downloading it, unzipping it, when asked just tell Audacity where it is located.
Very easy to use and it does a good job.

Converting with iTunes

LSchwabe wrote:

Add the file to your iTunes library then right-click on it. Select "Convert Selection to MP3".

The resulting MP3 file will end up in C:\Documents and Settings\user name\My Documents\My Music\iTunes\iTunes Music\Unknown Artist\Unknown Album.

Plus Rip CDs to MP3

If you want to do more than just convert to MP3, give the free http://www.eusing.com/CDRipper/CDRipper.htm a try. With it you can rip CDs to MP3 and load the music to many GPS units. Oh, did I mention it was free?

Convert to XXX depends on import preference.

andrewburt wrote:

Note that the "Convert to XXX" option will use which ever preference you have chosen when you import music off CDs. In other words, if your import preference is set to import as AAC then the command will show up, when you right click, as Convert to AAC. So if you want to covert to MP3, if your iTunes preference isn't already set to MP3 for importing, you have to first change that to get the MP3 conversion option.

Thanks, this looks like a pretty good option for CD to MP3s, Great to know, haven't tried it yet, but sure will do. In this particular case I was actually looking for conversion from MP3 to WAV, for the nuvi that doesn't support MP3, but is ok with WAV files.

Yes, I do get the Convert to AAC when right-clicking, but can't figure out how to change the preferences to get the convert to WAV, or MP3. These are MP3s that I already have, and I just want to convert/export them to WAVs. I am using iTunes 7 on Windows XP.

Someone else also suggested Audacity, which is free and works quite ok, but was wondering whether iTunes could also go from MP3 to WAV as well, just for convenience.

Well, it's a bit more work, but just burn it to a CD... Files on a CD "ARE" in .wav format. So, after buring to a CD (use a R/W if you don't want to waste the 10-15 cents a blank costs wink and then insert the CD, and use the computers "explorer" to access the files.

Should be good to go then. But something like audacity (or any decent sound editor) is also useful to clean up the files, etc.

AAC vs MP3

I use iTunes to convert and just wanted to remind you that after you switch your preferences setting to import all files as MP3, you will be importing all new files as MP3s (instead of AAC), until you switch it back. Some people believe the AAC is of higher fidelity, so just don't forget.

Audio Conversion

I've used Switch with good results. It's a very handy (and small) freeware utility that allows one or many audio files to be converted between many different formats - including .wav and mp3.

Thanks everyone for letting me know where to get converters.

Wouldn't take .wav file

For some reason when I ran the POI Loader, the .wav file gave me an error when uploading my custom poi's to my gps.

Did You

Do you have version 2.5.2 of POI Loader, and did you put the SOX file in the directory with POI Loader?

Got it to work

bentbiker,
I got it to work now. I downloaded the SOX.EXE file and put it where it needed to go. I didn't need all of those other files in that .zip file for anything do I. I did not extract those other files in the download. Is that okay?

Just Sox.exe

That's all I did and it worked fine. I just extracted the main sox.exe file and copied it to the POI Loader program folder. I ignored the other files in the zip file.
