magellan routing error

On a recent trip from Virginia to NC, my M3225 created a route that was almost 100 miles longer than needed. It had me going 47 mile further south and returning on a parallel road. I was familiar with the area and immediately realized the error. I then tried to recreate the route several different ways, but it kept giving the longer one until I set it for "shortest distance".

Out of curiosity, I retried the original routing strategy, and this time it gave the shorter one. After I returned home, I tried this again with both the M3225 and a new RM1412. Again the 3225 gave me the longer path, but the 1412 gave me the correct one.

Worse yet, route 95 was closed about 20 miles into my trip. So, I tried the detour function for the first time. Although it was set for 3 miles, it had me backtracking to my origin and proposed a route that would have added 4 hours to my trip time!

Is this normal? Anyone have any ideas on why this is happening?

I've had some strange stuff happen but not that specifically. I haven't had occasion to use the detour function.

I always carry a paper map as a backup.

I have found that if you ignore the "wierd" route and go the way you know is best, it will often "catch up" fairly quickly and plot the correct path.

In testing my 4250 last week, it tried to route me 3 miles out of the way, through 2 subdivisions, in order (apparently) to avoid a 1/2 mile stretch of road. Only thing I can figure is the database had an error and thought that road was closed.

Who was that comment directed to??
There are no toll roads in my part of the country.
And even if that was selected, most toll roads are a lot longer than 1/2 mile.

Not a Magellan but...

I don't have a magellan but it's likely somewhat similar to a garmin. I've found that, if I had U Turns set as an avoidance I sometimes got idiotic routes.
