TomTom vs Garmin

Just to add a bit to the advantage of the TomTom, I purchased the 900 model a couple of years ago. One of the main reasons for purchasing it was that it has maps of both North America and Western Europe included. (I live in Belgium). In addition for 40 euros per year you can subscribe to and download all of the safety cameras in Western Europe, of which there are many. I'm not sure if Garmin has that possibility or not, but if you are driving in Europe it is a huge benefit. When I bring the TomTom to USA or Canada it's a simple matter to change the selection of maps.

Both are fine choices

I have both. iQue3600 and recently a free nuvi 200 from Garmin as well as TomTom 6 for PDA. There are a lot of 3rd parties do safety camera for both brands so it is a mute point.

The advantage of Garmin is its mapsource software. You can load multiple maps to the PC then pick any portion you'd like and build a custom one. TomeTom is much less flexible on this. It can be broken down but in much larger chunks but they are offered as different products and you can not mix multiple maps ). You can even combines a few different Garmin maps into a single image which is very valuable at times (for example a hunting trip that need both city and topo maps. The other thing Garmin is good about is its extensive mapping. It offers Topo, lakes, and coastal water maps to be used by the GPS as well.

Overall I am happy with both brands...

Speed cameras in Europe

I totally agree with Malc re the usefulness of speed camera alerts but those of you travelling in Switzerland should know that speed trap / camera alerts are actually illegal and any GPS device which allows for such warnings may be confiscated by the police (http://www.totalfrance.com/france/forum/viewtopic.php?t=3751...)

Speed Cameras

Tomtom's speed camera database is not very good in my opionion. At least in Italy... I prefer thirdy part poi. Much bigger

POI's in Italy

Giovino: Which POI third-party do you recommend for speed cameras in Italy (or elsewhere)?
