Help with writing POI

I want to write a POI. I know the coordinates, and I know that I need to give the file name the proper extension. What program should I use? What is the extension for the file's name? My GPS is Garmin's Nuvi 260W. Thanks.

PS. I enjoy and learn from these forums. They are most helpful.

read thru this

and see if it will help you. if not try doing a search on creating poi.

Start Here

I read the Garmin "example,"

I read the Garmin "example," but it two things are not clear to me: first, is there a space to separate the coordinates and/or the name? second, what file name extension do I apply when I am ready to save the file that will go into the Folder I have for it?

Thanks, again.

Use excel and in Column a put Longitude.Columb b Latitude.Column c name of poi.D comment such as address and phone number.Once you complete save the file as a csv(comma delimited)file.

If you don't have Excel...

Use Notepad and save as a csv file.

There are no spaces between fields. Fields are seperated with commas. The only spaces are those in the name and description fields and those are enclosed in quotes.

Here is what I ended up with

Here is what I ended up with after naming the file:
My_Home_Redlight.cvs.txt I used Notepad to write the file.

Does this make sense?

I tried to delete the .txt. I was not able to do it.

Do you think this is OK?

Double Extension

No, that double extension will cause problems. When you save the file in Notepad, there is a dropdown box in the Save dialog box called Save As Type. Click that down arrow and select All Files. That way, Notepad won't append the .txt extension on to the file name. Then type the filename My_Home_Redlight.csv

Make sure it is .csv

Your post had cvs - that's a Pharmacy. wink

Missing Addresses in self created POI's

I followed the directions to use Google Earth to create and inport POI's onto my Nuvi 760 and when I access them they are missing things like the address, phone # etc. Am I doing something wrong?

Try

You have to uncheck Hide extensions for known file types. To do so. Open my computer, Click tools on the menu bar, then Folder Options, Press the tab on view, scroll down and uncheck Hide extensions for known file types, click apply, then click ok. Now the txt file should show a .txt in the end when you rename it.

Try giving GeePeeEx Editor a whizz...
it attempts to preserve all the information present in the .kml file. (Imported phone numbers will be dialable).
