Loading POI's into MapSource via POI Loader

I am trying to load POI files into MapSource using Garmins latest POI loader. When I start the POILoader, I select the option for MapSource and then it asks for a .gpi file name I want to use. MapSource uses a.gdb format. I have tried it loading .csv files and .gpx files. It says points are loaded, but it is loading them into the .gpi file I have named. When I open Mapsource, the new POI's are not there.
I am able to open a .gpx file within MapSource, but it adds only as waypoints and looses the previous waypoints I have loaded.

I have the lastest Mapsource running City Nav 2008

THX

This is a known issue

This has been talked about on here before. Mapsource does not read the .gpi file and I have no idea why Garmin set the POILoader up the way they did.

I use that function to save POIs to GPI files that I name, then copy them to my GPSr. This allows me to run POILoader on new files without losing the old.

So can it be done another way?

OK, the quoted thread tells us that the poi uploader method of showing custom POIs in Mapsource does not work.

Does anyone have another way to get custom POIs to show up in Mapsource as POIs? I am not interested in the convert to gpx format and have them show us waypoints method.

?

If you want to see them in Mapsource, you have no choice but to convert them to a format that Mapsource can read. Mapsource doesn't read .csv files.

Mapsource has no concept of separate entities called Custom POIs/Favourites/Waypoints - it just calls them "Waypoints". Only if you use the "Transfer to Device" option, do they become 'Favourites'. If you (re)save them as .gpx files and use them as input to POILoader, they become Custom POIs. (If you use those .gpx files as input to some of the Map making software, they become embedded POIs.)

So the solution is to to just use .gpx files for your Custom POIs - then no conversion is necessary wink

sucks! So, is there

sucks!
So, is there something other than mapsource
to view POIs on a map?

.

You can use the Trial version of GeePeeEx Editor. It can read your POIs in csv format, as well as (obviously) .gpx.

You can then use "View in Google Maps" to view each entry, one at a time in an embedded Google Map. You can use the "View in Google Earth" function to view all the selected ones, at the same time, in Google Earth.

The Trial version has no restrictions in this respect.

The only other way to get custom POIs that are not already in GPX format into MapSource is to manually put them in one at a time. If you need to see custom POIs in MapSource. You could open up a CSV file in NOTEPAD and manually input them in. Or simply use a small bey easy converter and convert the CSV file into GPX.

There is NO DIFFERENCE in WAYPOINTS and CUSTOM POIs. The only difference is how you want to use them. And this is solved in how you load them into your NUVI.

Using SEND TO on Mapsource makes FAVORITES using PoiLoader makes CUSTOM POIs and allows alerts to be attached. BUT THEY ARE STILL JUST ALL WAYPOINTS

It's all up to you. You can do it the easy way or the hard way. But it can be done.

My experience

I'm not quite sure what the difference is but I simply created a file to save to on my desktop and clicked on the POI Loader 'Browse' and choose the file I saved to; and then just follow the prompts.
Did I miss something other than the trouble part? They are all in my device too.
What is mapsource?

You did it right roadgypsy

MapSource is a Gamin software program that runs on your PC to create routes and waypoints, which can then be downloaded to your GPS. Some Garmin GPS units don't do the routing, but you can still download waypoints.
