Loading POIs onto The NUVI Drive or SD Drive or BOTH

In playing around with my Nuvi750 I found what might be called a quirk.

If you save your Custom POIs to your Nuvi Drive they will be located at X:\Garmin/Poi\poi.gpi

Then if you reload your custom POIs into your Nuvi and DO NOT transfer the POIs to the Nuvi Drive but leave them on the SD Drive you now have 2 copies of the custom POIs. The Original ones on the Nuvi Drive and now also on the SD Drive y:\garmin\poi\poi.gpi and they will be duplicated on your NUVI.

It seems that the custom POIs on the Nuvi Drive are not overwritten in this case..

This can be beneficial to you.

You could keep all of your custom POIs that are loaded/re-loaded in the EXPRESS mode on the Nuvi Drive. And all the custom POIs that do require to be loaded/re-loaded in the Manual mode on the SD Drive.

To do this all you have to do is on your PC is to have 2 folders set up, 1st for Express mode POIs and the 2nd for all Manual mode POIs. These folders would be the same as you have now with any subfolder used for categorizing. All you would be doing is separating the contents into 2 folders.

This way when you had to load or re-load your Manual mode POIs you wouldn't be affecting your Express mode POIs at all.

Just a thought as to how this quirk can be used.

Just remember that if you were storing your custom POIs on your Nuvi Drive and then decided to change and begin storing them on the SD Drive, you will have to manually remove them from the Nuvi Drive or they will be duplicated.

Another Advantage

Another advantage of this feature is that you can keep ALL your POIs on a card and when it comes time to test a new POI file, you can load it onto the unit and not mess up your real POIs.

Garmin found new data on the card message

I just added an SD card and also noticed that adding POIs to the card did not remove the original POIs. I clearded them out and have only the POIs on my card. Now every time I turn on the Nuvi I get a message "found new data on the card, do you want to import it?" It gives the path to Garmin/POI/POI.gpi so I assume this would create a duplicate copy of my POIs. Rather than experiment a bit more, I took the easy path and turned off the message. Any down side to this?
