Best mount by far

I have been such a moron for not listing to others advice about the beanbag mount. For more than a year now I have spent hours devising different ways to mount my Nüvi. My last try was to fabricate a tall tubular thing that I glued the black disk to for using the sucson cup mount. I put this into the cup holder of my SUV and I thought, Wow this is it or at least until I tried to put the shifter into park and banged my knuckles. Okay so as much as I thought this beanbag thing will never work (especially the way I drive) but I’ll give it a try.
Best investment, it won’t budge. I can’t get it to slide or tip even if I try! Best mount by far!!!

I bought a mount through Amazon several months ago and am delighted with it. It can be found at http://www.amazon.com/Gilsson-UBM-Portable-Non-Skid-Dashboar.... I paid $8.98 + $13.67 shipping for a total of $22.65. It's convenient to store, easy to handle and grips the dash of both my pickup and our Camry beautifully. I've been nothing but pleased with it.

The problem with those mounts is that sometimes the suction cup might not stick.

Panavise

There is a company called Panavise that makes custom in-dash mounts for cars. All that you will need is the part that fits onto your Nuvi which attaches to the dash mount.

Another Friction mount

I didn't have much luck with the Garmin mount on my slanted dash. I picked up this mount from Arkon and am completely satisfied. It mounts really low on the dash and does not obstruct visibility at all. I've finally quit looking for the "perfect" mount. Disclaimer no interest in company, just a satisfied customer.

Mount Options

Thanks for the site link Ranger Rod. They have several different choices, window, dash, cupholder and even lighter socket.

My only hesitation

My only hesitation about suction cup or vent mounts is that they are both more difficult to competely remove from sight. GPSr thefts are so rampant that I don't want to give anyone any unnecessary clues as to what I have in my vehicle. Plus, the beanbag works great in the vehicles I've used it in.

Vent Mount for Garmin

I use a vent mount for my Nuvi and even take it on trips and put it in the rental cars. Works great and no one can see the GPS. Check out the Mount Guys. www.mountguys.com

I've seen off-brand ones at Wal-Mart, but it was just the bean bag part and you use the suction cup mount that came with the Garmin to suction it to the bean bag.

I didn't know that Costco had that, and I'm looking for my 680. Thanks

Non-Garmin beanbag mounts

Folks ask about the non-Garmin beanbag mounts and say that they are much cheaper than the Garmin mount. While that's true and I'm sure they work well they are NOT the same.

The Garmin beanbag mount has the "gooseneck" that you mount the GPS onto. The other brands don't. They are designed to be used in conjunction with the suction mount. I'm sure that works just fine but that is the reason they are so much cheaper. They are only half the mounting solution.

after much consternation, I decided I would mount my suction disk in a place that would not break any state laws for visibility, provide me and my co-pilot easy access to the unit, and most importantly, NOT become another projectile in the vehicle during a collision.

The double-sided tape is useless, especially in the TX heat. I opted for contact cement to mount the disk in a non-conspicuous location that also happens to be right next to a 12vdc outlet. I've had passengers think this was a factory install in my Honda Element smile

Mounts

Do Not use a mount that leaves any telltale signs that you use a GPS. Thieves will break into the car and rummage around.....looking in trunk, under seats for your unit to steal.
Don't be another victim - Do the safe thing and take your unit with you when parked in public, or even in your driveway!

Looks like Amazon has the mount for a fairly low $26.52 at: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000LRMS66/ref=pd_cp_e_0?pf...

(with free shipping).

Im 100% happy with the bean bag mount too.

Works just fine for me in my Toyota Sienna van. It has never moved. I like not having the suction cup marks on the windshield also.

Haven't given up yet

Just like Amontman, 'm still searching for the "perfect" mount. I have a floor mount, a gooseneck cup-holder mount, a beanbag, and Garmin's. So far, beanbag is still winning. But I haven't given up looking. Stubborn!!??

Agreed, I really like the

Agreed, I really like the Garmin beanbag mount. No sticky pads, no suction cups, no trouble.

Trust me....you get what you pay for. If you are going to spend money for a bean bag mount for goodness sakes buy the one that was designed to work with the Garmin units...Spend the same amount or a couple bucks more and get the Garmin...

OK, I bit and bought through Amazon

Should receive the order in a week or so.

Followed suit...

For a couple reasons, I followed suit and got a friction/bean bag Garmin mount for my Nuvi 360. First, the suction cup was wearing out and would fall off randomly. Second, I'm making a trip to California in a couple weeks where I can't use my suction cup legally.

I got my friction mount yesterday, and boy am I happy! Thank you all for promoting this thing. It's not obtrusive, and it is very adjustable. It's also very easy to grab and go, no matter if you're just moving it off your dash to the floor or moving it to another car. This will go in my carry-on and then get tossed right into the rental car.

Bean Bag

Is there anyone who can post a picture of this -bean bag.

Amazon Bean Bag

I bought one from Amazon for a trip lo cali. I was amazed how well it worked. The guys in security had some fun trying to figure out what it was in carryon screening, tho. It was the Bracketron UFM-100BL Nav-Mat GPS Friction Dash Pad. Has worked well in a variety of rental cars. It's $11.44 today.

Magellan 3225 cause it goes ding

I'll have to try this out.

My four "must-have" accessories for nuvi (660/760)...

I got my nuvi 760 from Costco although I didn't see or know about the accessory kit. That is a good idea and nice bundle. However, I already had the leather case, AC charger and the friction mount from a previous nuvi (660) last June, as well as the external antenna. I'm not sure why the accessory kit includes an extra USB cable (which is already included w/the unit) as you say, unless it plugs into the adapter. I have Garmin's AC adapter which is a one-piece unit with cord.

I too love and swear by my friction (bean bag) mount! To gregb882, I'm a long-time Phoenix resident too, so I sympathize with you on the heat (although I am spending the summer at a SoCal home I share where it gets down to 60s at nights all summer). I basically have 3 cables running to the mount all concealed under my custom dashmat (much needed since I have a large SUV dash and again, AZ heat is brutal on dashboards without one) and within the creases of the instrument panel on the dash. The external antenna is routed from the outside corner of roof through window frame under mat and is always there to plug in, as is the mount. The FM transmitter/DC charger is routed from the cigarette lighter discretely up the instrument panel and under the mat too and left connected to the mount (I use the mat's defroster opening to route to the mount). Also, I have a dedicated 1/8" audio plug that comes out of my dash (custom installed from the rear of my after-market Kenwood stereo) reaching both my iPod or nuvi mounts that I have always used since I bought my TrailBlazer and first iPod when they came out in fall of 2001. Now due to popularity many stereo systems have dedicated iPod dock ports, but I've gotten almost 7 years out of this, and it works great with anything with a headphone port. I like the way I can listen to MP3s on my nuvi and have the voice momentarily interrupt for navigation, which I can't do when using my iPod and nuvi simultaneously. However, the nuvi is only large enough to hold a dozen or two of my selected favorite songs.

I think those four accessories (AC adapter, leather case, bean bag mount & external antenna) are all very useful and nicely round-out the nuvi unit. The case doesn't fit quite as snugly (like a glove) as it did on the 660, which is a hair thicker, but works fine.

Whoa! Delete the unused voice files and the extra sample junk you don't use and you'll have tons more space on your nüvi! Also, get yourself an SD card - 2GB is good but you can go to a 4GB if you like. Just stay away from the SanDisk Ultra series. (Other SanDisk cards are fine.) You can put about a zillion mp3 songs on a 4GB card.

Beanbag rules!

I've used the beanbag for 3 years and never had it slide off - it's used in 3 different vehicles. Plus it goes in the trunk or in your bag, and no sign it was ever there...

True, but...

Well you are right thrak, if I really wanted to use it as my car's primary mp3 player I could, but not sure if I'd retire my 60 GB iPod Photo or 8 GB iPod Touch for music just yet, LOL. But the only real issue is this: I rip (and usually download) in the superior AAC (.m4a) file which half of my songs are already in. If I wanted to I suppose I could convert the ones I want to .mp3 with iTunes then load them to the nuvi and erase them from the computer again. Is anyone able here to play AAC files on their nuvis or GPS units?

This is excellent news since

This is excellent news since I just ordered one of these a few hours ago. Kind of ironic that I find the topic after the fact, but I will sleep better not having to worry how well it will really work.

(those damn suction cups and dash disks were driving me crazy)

Bean Bag

Love my bean bag bought it the same time i got my 760 and no problems

There is one distinct advantage of Nuvi as primary MP3 player

SWLinPHX wrote:

There is no doubt that the performance of your iPods are superior as players. But there is one advantage of using the Nuvi as your primary player while in the car: It will automatically pause the music when it needs to give you route guidance and then continue where it left off. The voice quality is pretty impressive while coming through your car speakers, too. If you like to have your music loud, you don't have to worry about having Nuvi compete when giving voice prompts.

How tedious that would be, to maintain two copies of everything, though.

Bean Bag

I don't own a bean bag mount, but I would like to know if they slide when you push the buttons. I mounted my Nuvi with the suction cup on the windshield on the left side of the steering wheel and routed the wire down the left and under my dashboard. It's a pretty clean look.

Bean Bag

No! It will not slide when pushing on the buttons. At least it never has for me.
Your suction cup mount set up may be pretty clean but it will not hold. In time it will disconnect.

My Bean Bag -

I've been using my bean bag since about a week after I got my Nuvi 660. That dumb suction mount fell off even though I cleaned the window completely and used various liquids. Got the bean bag and never looked back. Sure glad, it's great!! I've recommended it to all my local friends. It's the best way to go.

Beanbag mount

I bought the bean bag mount last week and "waddaya know" the darn thing works great. On of the few things I have bought recently that actually works better than advertised.Little pricy, but worth every cent.

Very pleased with the functionality of the beanbag mount. Much quicker to move in and out of the car in comparison to the windshield mount, and very steady with my driving habits (but I drive a Saturn sedan smile ). Recommended.

Garmin Bean Bag Mount is Excellent

My Streetpilot 2720 came with one. When I sold it and purchased a Nuvi, I really missed the convenience of having it around.
I have one now and use it when I use the Nuvi in my wife's van. A must have accessory. Works great!

730 TomTom

Anyone using this beanbag mount with a TomTom 730/720/920/930 series? I see the donut type bag blocks the cords. This one looks good. I just ordered a GO730 and want to get a beanbag before my trip next week.

Thanks for the help!
