Love my new Garmin 660. But, was curious... when I click on the EXTRAS icon/button on the Garmin - it tells me 'No Extras Are Installed' and sends me over to the /extras URL at the main Garmin web site.
But what 'Extras' can I actually install from this site to my model 660? Sorry, but I'm new to all this. I see some 'Games' there but none appear to be compatible with my 660.
Does this mean the only 'Extras' I can use (to actually have that button DO something useful - lol) are things on that page that must be 'purchased'?
Thanks in advance for any help!
extras
May of the members like myself like to install out own custom pois to the gps unit. The method to do this is listed in FAQ above for Garmin units.Lots of poi files here for you to download.See list above top right poi files.Once you start loading and creating you custom poi files the extras won't be empty anymore.

Surprised
I'm surprised that you don't have a sample of a Fodor's travel thingie. Of course this is where you will see your custom POIs once you install them.
Nuvi 660 -- and not upgrading it or maps until Garmin fixes long-standing bugs/problems, and get maps to where they are much more current, AND corrected on a more timely basis when advised of mistakes.
Custom POIs
Ah! So once I download the custom POIs (which I was actually planning on doing TONIGHT), to get to those, I need to use the EXTRAS button? Sweet!
Thanks for the heads-up!
Anyone ever purchased and used one of their Garmin SaversGuide Membership cards?

The extra button will list your custom pois you download once you touch the screen. You will use poi loader to download custom pois to the gps.You can download it at http://www8.garmin.com/products/poiloader/ .You need to review the faq about how to install custom pois. See http://www.poi-factory.com/node/85 Then if you have any questions post them so someone can jump in and help if needed.

Will do - thanks again! I already have downloaded and installed the loader, but have yet to use it - that will happen hopefully tonight!

Ok sounds good.I posted this
Ok sounds good.I posted this on another thread that may help you when you start downloading the files tonight and want them to show up under extras as categories.
Just create a main folder on your computer and from that folder make subfolders and name them like you want based on the pois you download. Then put the csv files into the correct subfolder.Run poi loader and direct it to the main folder not the subfolders.Once complete it will show number of pois loaded.Go where to on gps,my locations then custom pois or extras and you should see lising of your custom pois.
This is what it should look like on your computer based on my example.
My pois=main folder
>>Food=subfolder
>>>McDonalds.csv
>>>BurgerKing.csv
>>Stores=subfolder
>>>Target.csv
>>>WalMart.csv
>>National Parks=subfolder
>>>National Parks.csv
>>Alerts=subfolder
>>>Redlight cameras.csv
>>>Speed cameras.csv

Extras
I'm glad to see this thread because I've been wondering what else besides Custom POI's can go under Extras. I see someone mentionedthe Tudor Guide, what else would you put in this area and how?

I see in the owners manual http://www8.garmin.com/manuals/1262_OwnersManual.pdf pages 51,52 and 53 it talks about the Travel guide accessory under extras.

Thanks!
Hey, I did this last night and it worked great - would have never known to create separate 'folders' to store under the main POI folder, so thanks very much!

Glad everything worked
Glad everything worked out.Keep in mind when you add new subfolders to your main folder that you have to re_download all of them.It will overwrite the existing files. There are work arounds to this but I found it takes little time to re-download.
Now if you want you can go back and instead of using the express mode select manual on the poi loader and you can set up alerts.
I do keep some other files on my computer that I only download when needed instead of putting all of them on the unit at one time.

extras
don't forget to add the sound alerts to many of your poi,s. It's really neat when your traveling to be alerted to rest stops and other points of interest that you have loaded.
