How to load POI files

For anyone who is having trouble or just wonders how to load a POI file to there gps this may be helpful.

I have searched the site and did not find a post for this "how to" but it may be somewhere..

First have all of the files to be loaded in one folder i.e. (My POIs)

Have the folder some place you can locate it easily.

Next make sure the files are named identically.

As and example:
Redlight-Cameras.csv
Redlight-Cameras.bmp
Redlight-Cameras.mp3

Or

Schools.csv
Schools.bmp
Schools.mp3

Make sure windows or you haven't inadvertently put double extensions on the files. i.e. Poi.csv.csv etc

The bmp and mp3 files are not needed if you are just interested in the points of interest.

Make sure you have the latest poi loader available from Garmin at:
http://www8.garmin.com/products/poiloader/

Attach your gps unit to your computer.
Start poi loader.
At splash screen select next.
Under Save Options select Garmin Device.
Select next.
Wait for you device to be found and select next.
Select Install new custom POI’s onto your device and select next.
Browse to the folder the files are in. i.e. (My POIs)
Then choose units for distance and speed.
If you are not going to use proximity alerts select Express (Recommended)
Select next and the poi file or files will load.

If you are going to use proximity alerts select Manual. Then select next.
Select this file contains proximity alerts.
Depending on what you want to be alerted to Select either:
‘Alert when speed is greater than the alert speed’ and enter MPH or
‘Alert whenever you get close to a point’ and then enter the alert distance.
If you are loading more than one file you will have to make the previous selections for each file. Then select next and the files will load.

After installing the files you can find them by selecting 'Where to?", Then "Extras" and finally tap "Custom POIs"

I hope this helps someone...

Have you tried to "Edit" your original post to correct it? You should be able to do so until someone replies to it.

An Aside on Editing

One side note to be aware of . . . Every time you edit a post, it bumps it to the top of the Unread Posts list, so someone using that feature who has just read your first post will be constantly redirected back with each edit, and unless you note the "Edit" at the bottom, it can be difficult for them to figure out what has changed, or even why they are repeatedly being directed back. I've been sent back as many as 5-6 times when people fail to use the preview screen to proof-read and do their proof-reading on the final post.

I always use the preview feature...

And I write it in MS Word with spell check…

And I still make errors that I have to correct. I guess I'm not the brightest bulb in the box, even if my mother did call me son...

Also a few minutes after I made the post and giving another person advice to read “getting started”, I followed my own advice and guess what I found?

redface

Let's see if I can make this post without an edit... surprised Nope
