Can I swap 2008/2009 maps?

I have a backup of my Nuvi 750 that I made when it had the 2008 maps installed. Now that I have updated to 2009 maps (and made another backup), is it possible to swap the 2008 or 2009 maps into the Nuvi at will?

I'm trying to find a way to verify the differences I'm noticing between the two versions.

Use mapsource on the PC

The install loaded the new maps to mapsource on your pc (if you had it on there). If this is the case, you will have access to both there. Just choose the one you want from the drop down.

Only have backup

I would like to know the answer to this question as well.

I'm on a mac and Bobcat (I think this is the mapsource equivelent) does not have the 2008 map that came on my nuvi 200, only the new 2009 map. I do have a backup on my computer though.

GMAPSUPP.IMG on SD card

If you've got the original GMAPPROM.IMG containing the V2008 maps, you can copy this to an SD card and rename it to GMAPSUPP.IMG.

Then, both V2008 + V2009 maps will be selectable via the "Tools | Maps | Map Info" screen - (or the equivalent option on the unit in question).

I wouldn't like to place bets on what will happen, if you leave BOTH sets selected at the same time though!!

You may find that you need to create a GMAPSUPP.UNL file on the SD card, containing the 25 digit unlock code for the V2008 maps (without the dashes).

swapping maps

I have a nuvi 370 with both North America & Europe maps pre-installed. I downloaded a Philippines map from a link on a post. I also downloaded a Dubai map from http://mapcenter2.cgpsmapper.com/catalogue.php, to use when I was there 3 weeks ago. I renamed the gmapsupp.img (Philippines map) file to gmapsuppPI.img and loaded the Dubai map. When I came back from Dubai trip, I renamed the Dubai map (gmapsuppDXB.img) and renamed back gmapsuppPI.img to gmapsupp.img. Got the Philippine map back in place for my trip next week.

**Note Both maps are not official Garmin maps and doesn't require any license for use. I don't know how it will affect the Garmin licensed maps. You can try having both of the (2008 & 2009) 25 digit unlock code on your GMAPSUPP.UNL.

Make sure you have a good backup of your original files.

Backup and Restore

Ron,

If the concept of backing up your entire drive really works, you should be able to overwrite the entire drive, including all the necessary support files to do as you suggest. We have only heard of one or two people who claim to have actually done it though. Make sure you let us know the results if you try it -- especially if you end up with a doorstop. wink

Nuvi 660 -- and not upgrading it or maps until Garmin fixes long-standing bugs/problems, and get maps to where they are much more current, AND corrected on a more timely basis when advised of mistakes.

Can not revert back to 2008

I sent an email to garmin about restoring back to 2008 map they said i could if i had the 2008 disc. and i don't have one. it's a shame i did not backup 200w before i updated to 2009. guess i'm stuck with new update, at least i got 2009 on the computer now. wink

bentbiker,
Having been involved with computers since the advent of the "chip", your suggestion really peaks my curiosity. But my Nuvi is only 3 weeks old and much too young to be a doorstop yet!
Still... I'd like to know the answer (just not willing to be the guinea pig)! laugh out loud

To Hornbyp, I like the idea of having the 2008 map on an SD card and I just happened to pick up a 2Gig card at Wal-mart yesterday!
I'll give it a shot tonight.

Thanx for the input, all.

.edit..
Worked perfectly! I copied the 2008 map to the card and renamed it. It shows up. No problem.. Thanx again!
