Can POIs only be accessed in their own folders?

I am new to the GPS world, having just purchased a Nuvi 260W. Is it not possible to load, say, a McDonald's POI file so that when you search Fast Food, all those locations in the custom POI also appear? In other words, do custom POIs appear in any of the pre-existing folders (Food, Recreation, etc.), or are they only accessible via the Custom POI folder?

.

No. Unfortunately not.

You have to search each database separately. The Custom POIs will not (currently) show up with the built in POIs which are part of the map data.

Unfortunately, the custom pois and the built in pois are in two separate files and cannot be accessed together. In practice, if I am looking for a type of restaurant, I look in my custom pois for the nearest, otherwise, I might use the built in pois.
