Magellan 3225 User POI

Hello all,

I just got a 3225 (Costco of course) and I have 2 questions surrounding the user POI files:

1) Do they have to be separate files? Seems silly i'd have to load a separate file when seaching. I'd hope it would be seemless with the delivered POI files.

2) anyone have a Magellan User POI file for Canada that's already been loaded? I find it takes some work to use the posted csv or other files. The gpx files don't load 'nicely' with all the posted information such as address and phone numbers.

THANKS!

1) Sorry, that's just the way it works.....and not just for Magellan. AFAIK, ALL the consummer GPSr's work like that. They don't want "us" messing with their master POI file(s).

2) While it would be possible for Magellan users to exchange .mgln files, I haven't seen it done yet. You probably need to get comfortable with the POI Editor you got with the unit.

P.S. It appears that address and phone number fields (description) are stored in the Magellan units but can't be displayed.

If you haven't already, use the search function a bit. Some other good posts here about Magellan POIs.

I just received my 4250 and it does display the description. Not sure if displayed before I upgraded to latest flash or not.

But it does display the description field.

Yep, one of the primary uses for the "Enhanced POI's" is for proximity alerts. You can search an Enchanced POI file, but you it is a different search from the built in POI file.

From a "custom" POI file that you loaded yourself?
At what point can you see the information in the descr. field?

Yes. An example I have all the state parks from my state I entered into the Magellan POI Editor. Using the State Park Name & City in the Name field & the Phone number in the description field. After loaded into the GPSr from the main menu screen I got to: Points of Intrest > Enhanced > Select Cataegory > Nearest (then select the POI.

In the information screen the top header "Route to This Address?" and below list "State Park Name & City" next Line "Phone Number" both of which were entered through the POI Editer. In the same screen the GPSr added "Street" Next Line "City, State"

Below this I get the choice to "Route Save Cancel".

If I select "Save" I it puts this info into the Address Book and will also give me the option to edit the Name & Description fields as well as phone number fields.

In reading up on the Magellans on this site, I was under the impression I could not use the description field, but noticed it does work. Some of the files download from here have embeded line breaks which the 4250 recognizes also, although I don't know what character it's using for the LF/CR.

I have not tested the 10 catagory / 1000 POI's per catagory limit also stated in this forum and elsewhere.

Oops, looks like the 4250 works differently than the 4000.....at least now anyway. Maybe they will eventually update the POI Editor to support those extra address fields.......otherwise they are pretty much useless.

The "Street", "City" and "State" fields are automaticly populated by the GPS based on coordinates furnished in the POI Editor. This auto population omits the actuall street address & zip code.

Cool !!

A1: No. You don't have to load all the POI files. You can always merge the files as you like.
A2: I guess because everyone is interested in a different kind of POI files is hard to share a "mgln" file.
