Since people are using them more around town as a radar/red-light warning system, picture viewer, mp3 player, how about taking advantage of the drive space (and or additional memory card) and incorporate a forward facing video camera. It would be advantageous not only for recording things should an accident occur, but possibly down the road these videos could be put together to build a visual route system. A while back a few seconds of video used to take an enormous amount of space, but not anymore! I'm sure people would be able to think of a million more things that they could be used for. All they's need to do is to incorporate a camera that pivots just like the ones on newer laptops.
Camera
You mean like my SP7200 where I have a camera (on the dash, looking forward) plugged in to the camera jack and a mobile DVR recorder plugged in to the A/V out jack?

Sorry, I meant integrating a camera into a gps. The lens would be facing forward and recording things if turned on. I'd have quite a few crash videos if I'd had something like that.
Very..
Very interesting...a little tweakin and we're talking...

And while working at that - how about a built-in popcorn maker - it will bring the drive-in movie theater experience to a new level!
I dont belive in those combo - do-it-all gadgets - IMHO the GPS should be GPS and not a camcorder, mp3 player, image viewer, ebook reader etc There are a lot of things in the current devices that need improvment, just as a GPSr before trying to find out what else we can stick in the box and create a platform for more things to go wrong (break).
The only thing that beats breaking $500 GPS receiver by accidentally droping it on the ground is breaking the $1200 GPS+camcorder+what-not receiver in a car crash.
if it proves the accident
if it proves the accident isnt my fault, i dont think i would care if it gets broken
Security Feature Camera
The orignal post might have been in jest, but it's not a total bad idea. It would be nice to have a video camera (I think they are very cheap) intetrated into the windshield mount units just to keep track of what's happening. They could provide evidence of crime, help find causes of accidents, and provide an incentive for people to behave on the road. I'm not advocating anything dumb like playing the video to the screen in real time, just recording an hour or two of video in a constant circular recording that can be stopped when a crime is done.

I use my gps for what it is ment for, and dont use it for red lights or radar detector, maybe some do, I dont think it is the majority.....
