Lost Street Names with 2009 Updates

While using my Nuvi 350 on a trip through rural Illinois today, I noticed that the many of the highways I traveled had lost their street names. These were 2 and 4 lane highways that had their names on the 2008 maps. Now they are showing CR-13, CR-27, etc. instead. Also odd were the roads that were both a state route and a county route. Nuvi only showed the county route number. But the road signs only had the state route number. What used to show on the Nuvi as Hwy 47 was now CR-xx instead. Confusing, to say the least!

Problem is, none of these roads have County Route signs on them anywhere. So when Nuvi says to turn right on County Route 13, all you see are signs that say Jones Road instead.

Has anyone else noticed this on roads in your area?

One totally wild guess and a comment:

Could this be a function of the current zoom level?
That is, would both names show up if zoomed in closer? Probably not since they aren't spoken either.

In some (many?) parts of Illinois, one corner of the intersection has signs with the CR numbers and the opposite corner has signs with the SR number or common name........except MY corner where one has been taken out by an accident and not replaced!

Sounds like you went right through my neck of the woods!

New "feature" of 2009 maps

After exchanging emails with Garmin tech support, they blame the Navteq 2009 data. Their answer was "we just display what's on the map".

I don't completely buy that, though. If I search for an address on Randall Road in Geneva IL, it will find it and route there with no problem. But it will display as and the voice prompts will refer to it as County Route 34 all the way. It is this way in MapSource, too. So it knows BOTH the name and the CR#. It's only displaying and speaking the route numbers.

This is a large change from the 2008 data, which displayed and spoke the street names but also showed a route sign on the map display. Now with 2009, there is only the route#'s and no street names. They're in there somewhere but they are not displayed or spoken any more. This change affected a LOT of roads in my area.
