free space? (what is safe to delete)

how can i free space on my nuvi 200 like what is safe to delete and what is not also i updated to 2009 do i need to delete 2008 or did it do that when i updated to 2009 thanks for your time Jester

.

Connect your nuvi to your computer with a USB cable. It will show up as a removable drive.

BEFORE YOU DELETE ANYTHING, BACK UP THE ENTIRE DRIVE TO YOUR COMPUTER.

Then you can safely delete any voice or vehicle files that you don't need. You can always load them back later.

You might also want to temporarily remove your Custom POI file(s) which are the .GPI file(s).

DO NOT DO ANYTHING TO ANY OF THE .IMG FILES. These are your maps.

You do not need to delete the 2008 map. The update program will overwrite the previous map with the new one.

thanks can i delete the help

thanks can i delete the help files that are in other langages?

.

Yes.

Free Space - Move Maps to SD Card

Since you updated to 2009, you have the map DVD.
With MapSource, you can control what is downloaded to the internal memory and what is stored on the SD card.

I have a c330 with insufficient internal memory to hold the entire 2009 map so i installed the Lower 48 to Internal and Canada, Alaska, Hawaii and Puerto Rico to a 1 GB SD card of which only a little over 100 K is used.

I could have most of the map on SD card, and reserve a lot of internal memory for POI's. MapSource is the secret for controlling state by state, what is stored where. I have one 2GB SD card with the entire 2009 map and almost 1 GB spare.
I don't know the minimum map (*.IMG) size in internal memory but it appears you have to transfer something to erase the previous ... maybe just Puerto Rico, etc. When you transfer any portion of a map, you erase all of the previous map. You do not have the option to add to, you completely overwrite existing.

With a NUVI, you should have at least 2 GB internal memory which is twice what my c330 has. You can also use the diagnostic mode to check the size of both internal and SD memory. Refer to other posts on how to do this.

StreetPilot c330 and c550 with 2009 City Navigator Map in Metro Atlanta

so i could just load the

so i could just load the U.S. cause thats all i need I didnt get the dvd but i already had mapsource and i do use it but i dont know how to get it to load only certain parts of the 2009 update can u tell me or link me on how this is done thanks

Voices can go.

With the 200, your biggest bang for the buck as far as getting the most space freed up with deleting some files is to throw out any voice files you don't need and/or can't use.

The voice files are big and unless you can understand Chinese AND French AND Korean AND Russian AND ... you can safely throw some out.

Plus if you run the updater on your 200, you will find that it will offer you any languages back that you deleted, so you can always easily add them back later if needed.

Cheers,
PT

Free space

I had called Garmin, they had givin me the wrong info.I had deleted GMAPPROM.IMG file which was a big mistake,no fix but too send it back.Any voice or anything in the help file(russ, jap, germ, and so on)..Luckly talking to Garmin Tech they are replacing for free and send them the old one.smile

GMAPPROM.img

If you delete this file from a NUVI, there is another way to recover it, IF you know your unlock code. That is the 25 digit code Garmin gives you when you first register the NUVI. With this code, you can copy the .img file from any other NUVI with the same version map, like City Navigator 2009 NT. Then just create the gmapprom.unl file (as a test file on your pc) type in the unlock code and save the file to your NUVI. power down the NUVI and back up to load your map. Newer NUVIs don't use the .unl files, the code is buried in the map file, and there is a way to write your code, but it's kind of tricky. Anyway, this method (already tried it for a friend who 'accidently' deleted his map file, works fine... as long as you have your map unlock code. Saves the shipping and if you happen to be going on a trip shortly, lets you bring your NUVI with you!

As a reminder, with NUVIs, it is best to write down your unlock codes for purchased maps and the preinstalled maps, and then backup the whole device as discussed in other threads on this forum. Backing up has been a real life saver.
