Sure glad I did a little experimenting before buying a Friction Mount>>>

Okay, so I am pretty ticked off at Garmin lately, the windshield suction mount is falling off all the time...seems if you remove it to clean the windshield, for security, etc. and it sticks a little bit, you get that black residue on your windshield...well over time that degrades the suction cup's ability to restick. The last week my suction cup has been the pits....falling every day and I'd finally had enough. I determined I was going to get a friction mount.

Well, I thought, better to take the windshield mount and flip it...hold it on the dash and make sure there was a good place to use a friction mount...WOW there are several great places in a 2004 Subaru Legacy...space and sight wise that is...reflection wise; there is no place on the dash that does not cause a bright (even on night setting) reflection off the windshield. VERY ANNOYING...at least to me.

Bought another windshield mount at Target and the unit is sticking like glue...in fact better than ever...seems Garmin might just have gotten the hint that their previous iteration of windshield mounts was...ummmm, politely put, inadequate!?!?!

If you are going the friction mount route, better check for reflection before you drop the coin smile

Friction mount is good for me

I don't have any issues with the friction mount but everyone has their own preferences.

I wouldn't expect any windshield mounts to last forever. The suction cups are made of plastic/rubber/silicone that will degrade over time.

You have to remember the direct sunlight and heat these things go through. Eventually that Target one you just bought will do the same thing.

IMHO, Garmin's windshield mount is pretty good considering what else is out there.

Maybe one day technology will catch up?

Hip Hip Hooray for the friction mount...the only way to go.....

Cleaners and suction cups...

This may or may not be the case in this instance...but most glass cleaners contain ethanol or methanol...both of which will degrade rubber and pit the rubber as you describe it over time...

Once the surface area/tension of the suction cup is broken/worn it will stick less and less..take a look at the 'shiny' underside of the new mounts that is the reason it sticks so well now and I would suspect that the old one is not so shiny anymore...

My point>>

My point was simply you should check reflections before buying the friction mount...I wish they would work for my car...hate to see someone spend the money and have the same problem...that's all.

Ted

I guess I am confused on the reflection...I have a Subaru Outback with a large sunroof and it doesn't seem to be a problem. The nice thing is the friction mount or the unit can be adjusted. Hey if it doesn't work for you don't get it obviously.

put water on it

I put water on it every time I put it back from removing for security reason

put water on it

I bought the sandbag. More than happy with it.

there is a reflection off the glass from the unit...it's like seeing 2 units...the real one and the reflected one.

That said, obviously I have somehow offended with this post and ask that an Admin just delete it.

Bean bag

I use a bean bag, no issues. But I'm working on a homemade mount using the vacant ashtray. I'm not a smoker anyway. So far, it's not been successful. I'm going to try again in the next couple of weeks.

Just got back to Virginia

Just got back to Virginia from Florida around 800 miles.Had a friction mount and had no problems with glare or slippage.

Charlie. Nuvi 265 WT and Nuvi 2597 LMT. MapFactor Navigator - Offline Maps & GPS.

I used windshield mount b4

I used windshield mount b4 and it fell off from time to time due to sun/heat degrading the suction cup.

I switched to friction mount and have been happy since. Plus suction mount is NOT legal in CA.

Friction Mount

This is one of those things that work for some and not for others. My StreetPilot 2720 came with the friction mount and I've been using it for over a year now with no issues. Last week when I bought my new Nuvi 750, I also purchased another friction mount to use with it. I've been very happy from day one with the friction mount. But as with all things, your mileage may vary!

The solution I found for GPS placement avoiding glare.

Dear Ted,

I have a 1996 Outback and perhaps there are significant differences from your 2004 Legacy. In the early morning when I am going to work, there is no glare and I use my beanbag. When I am returning home from work, there is sometimes a lot of glare; I then use the suction attachment. I have attached the glue-disk to the underside of the overhangin shade protecting the speedometer from glare. My placement only interferes with seeing my signal blinker for turning right and for speeds above 80 mph. This also works better for me in glare as my sunglasses are bifocals.

Unfortunately I do not have a digital camera but I have a friend who does and can ask him to document this position in case I have provided an inadequate description.

I agree with OP reflection

I agree with OP reflection is something we need to consider. Not every place is reflection free and it also depend on the sun light, the time of the day and direction of driving.

Generally, using black paper(board) can reduce reflection significantly. Use one on Top of the GPS unit would reduct the top reflection on GPS and on winshield. another on bottom front would reduce reflection on GPS.

Vent mount

I purchased a mount that clips to a vent. Its a pain to put on and take off the vent. But it is very reliable. I got it for my wife's nuvi 350 on ebay.

Garmin nuvi 760 mount

i have a maxima and mounted the garmin dash mount 010-10199-02 using the temp glue pad on the flat surface of the center vents ( just in front of the clock)
