An Interesting Day with 7200

Today was my first trip where I needed a gps to get there and back. I plugged in the address and was off. All was ok except my wandering all over the highway at 70 mph (others gave me lots of room!), until I wanted to get coffee.

Turns out the Starbuck icons do not show up at 8mi resolution. So I go to my custom poi's and see a list that all say Starbucks. I click on the first one but can't tell where it is with the 8mi screen. When I push the + button (about 30 time or so) I discover it is way the heck and gone from my highway, even tho I told it to find those near my current route.

So I try a couple others which are worse. By this time I'm not sleepy anymore but look up for the first time in a while and see a Starbucks sign about 500 yds off the road, but not on my poi.

So I pull in to the parking lot much to the dismay of Jack who severily chastized me for getting off the route and got my coffee.

Jack got even with me when I started back out. He said to drive East when the hwy was 500 yds to the West. No matter, I headed for the gas station that wasn't on the gps and got gas.

By now Jack was really pissed cause he started flashing maps going every which way with an incomplete "Recalcul..." in between every 3 or 4 of them. I just knew I stressed poor Jack out so I ignored him and got back on the road. For a couple miles he kept telling me to take the next exit. I told him to take the exit but I don't think he heard me.

Jack finally settled down and told me to keep going on the hwy for 30 miles or so and then pouted and wouldn't talk to me at all for the longest time.

When I got to the city he tried his best to get me to take the first exit and then the next, etc., even though I was on the East side of the city and my meeting on the West.

About that time it occurred to me I may have a setting wrong and sure enough I had it set for the shortest route, not fastest time. Changed that and Jack and I got on better terms right away.

I'm pretty sure he was relieved bacause his tone was much more pleasant when I pulled into a different Starbucks on the way back. He even recognized the side street and I thought I heard a "please" in the "return to the route I picked out for you, stupid." thing he did so often on the way up.

About the icons, I found out that if I had the screen set for 800' or less they show up. However, that does make it a challenge to pick one when going 75mph 60' behind the guy in front with semis taking their half of the road out of the middle.

That was my trip experience. I have some questions that I'll put in another thread.

I've had a trip like that.

I've had a trip like that. Got mad at Jack, then went to Karen. I, too, had it on shortest distance rather than Fastest. Switched to fastest, and all of us got along much better. That was one of my first trips, but I have learned a lot since then and things have gone very well since.

Jack does tend to get a little PO'ed at you every now and then, doesn't he? haha.

Fastest vs. Shortest

I won't have my Nuvi until tomorrow (UPS called to say it will be delivered - finally!) but I long ago learned to select Fastest rather than Shortest for my route. When geocaching the shortest route may take you over the top of a mountain on a something that is loosely termed a road. "But it's only 11 miles this way and 24 miles the other route" doesn't mean much when the 11 miles takes 2 hours to drive. rolleyes

I'm sure I'll have some "arguments" and adventures of my own learning how to deal with a new type of unit. I'm so used to the 76CSx that the Nuvi is going to be a completely different experience. I often ignore my route on purpose and my current unit will trill at me over and over as it recalculates. Hopefully the voice on the new unit won't make me any crazier than I already am.

Yep, I learned about the

Yep, I learned about the fastest and shortest on my first trip. Now I keep it on Fastest.

The shortest was shorter by 2 miles, but you went through stop lights rather than straigt Interstate, so it did take longer.

When I drive to my in-laws, who live 13 miles from us, it will always want to take me to the Interstate, but I know it's not fastest all the time due to traffic jams and stuff, so I just let Jack or Jill tell me they are recaluculating a few times.

Fastest, shortest & offroad

We just recently purchased a Nuvi 750 as I do deliveries all over the state of AZ. I also deliver to Southern California and will probably take on stops in western New Mexico as well. I drive a 3/4 ton pickup with a 25ft enclosed trailer behind it.
Just after purchasing the Nuvi my wife and I went away for our anniversary to the Pinetop/Lakeside AZ area where we like to do a lot of off-road travel over the forest service roads. We had Jill pretty confused a lot of the time but learned that in order for her to not direct us back to the main highway we had to change her to shortest route. Of course we never take a trip off-road without our atlas of back-roads in AZ (The AZ Gazateer) so we could compare the roads Jill was telling us to take with what shows up in our book.
We had a lot of fun frustrating Jill and confusing the heck out of her but considering where we were and what we were asking her to do for us she actually didn't do a bad job. Sure she might tell us to take this 4x4 Ram Mega-Cab up that hiking trail once in a while but she only squawks for a few seconds while she frustratedly tries to recalculate a new route.
After getting back to Phoenix, she does much better a;though I do switch back and forth between fastest and shortest routes. I also frequently change the avoidance options to select No U-Turns as my truck and trailer combined are about 50ft long. I also had to rename Jill to Jack as I could not handle some of the gross mispronounciations she comes up with. Jack seems to do a much better job. And for some of you 4x4 lovers out there, the route setting of off-road does not mean it will select 4x4 roads... it seems to be designed for walking.

U Turns

I learned about U Turn avoidance the hard way. I wasn't sure where I was headed and went across a highway instead of turning left. (My unit was just starting to calculate and I didn't want to hold up traffic.) Once across the highway I was directed to travel 14 miles, turn left, turn right, turn right, turn right yet again, travel the same 14 miles back to the highway, and then turn right. The end point was only 2 miles from where I should have turned in the first place. I no longer have my unit set to avoid U Turns. rolleyes
