Disconecting the Nuvi 760

I was wondering if it better for the unit if I disconnect it from the suction cup mount or remove the entire mount at night. I am sure the contacts will wear out eventually. Then again if i remove the suction cup mount i will wear out the suction cup. What do you do?

I use the dash bean bag mount that is available all over the web. I got mine from Amazon. My dash is pretty level and I have not any problems using this mount. It has never budged while driving. Unless you have a vertical dashboard, this will work. You can dismount the GPS, put it in it's case, and just leave the bean bag when you leave the car if you want, or throw the bag on the floor or under the seat if your afraid someone will rip it off. Cost is about $24.

Theft......

I'd guess that most folks are going to say to remove the mount. The reason is that thieves have been known to break into vehicle with a mount in hope of finding a GPSr to steal.

I've had a hand held mapping unit since August 2005 and have left my mount in my vehicle all that time without an issue.

leave no evidence

my passenger window was smashed in a failed attempt at stealing my gps. The thieves went straight for the glove box instead of stealing the sony stereo that was still in the dash. I left my window mount up as a tell tale sign. Luckily I dont leave my gps in the car. It costed over $400 in repairs and time off work.

Having only had mine for two

Having only had mine for two days, I haven't really gotten into a good routine yet. I'm using the friction mount, and have the external microphone connected and ran up to my visor. I've been removing the unit, but leaving the mount on the dash.

After having read the posts on theft, I'm thinking that I should just unplug the microphone and power, and take the whole kit with me.

It sucks that people suck. sad

If you remove the GPS, does

If you remove the GPS, does the MSN receiver stop working in battery mode? On the 680s it seemed that the Nuvi needed to be mounted to continue receiving MSN signals overnight with the power was off. If you pulled the Nuvi, the MSN receiver, as I recall, would stop getting data via its battery.

Is this true? And if so, is it true for the 700 series?
