Keeping POIs Custom

I have read the FAQs and other posts that come close to answering my question but not exactly. I just got a nuvi 750 and loaded a blank 1 GB SD card in it. I stumbled (luckily) onto this site and found several great POI files. I downloaded POI Loader, learned about making several folders for all my POIs and eventually loaded a bunch of POI files onto my SD card. One file however, Colorado Brewpubs.gpx, went into Garmin Favorites instead of staying as a Custom POI on the SD card. I had to delete them one-by-one in order to keep my Favorites manageable for a trip to Florida.

Can anyone tell me what I did wrong? Does it have anything to do with .gpx files versus .csv files which seemed to stay in Custom where I want them? Do I have to convert .gpx files to .csv?

I'll appreciate any advice. Thanks!

.

If you put GPX files on your GPS unit or SD card, they will be read into your Favorites.

Take them off the SD card and put them in a folder on your computer. Then run POI Loader and point it to the folder on your computer to install them to your unit.

This may help

c:\Program Files\Garmin\POI
AAA
Dick's Sporting Goods
Bait Shops

Create a subfolder under Garmin call POI
Create subfolders under POI with the categories you want then inside those folders have your files.
So if you look at mine, AAA is a folder then inside that is the AAA.csv

Hope this helps.

POI Loader

Then run POI Loader.
What I do is use a card reader, and load them onto it. When it's done I'll put the card back into my GPS but I never transfer them to the unit. I leave them right on the card.

I fell into the same mistake. As Motorcycle Mama already pointed out, when you have GPX files on the SD card, when you turn on the unit it is programmed to automatically load any GPX files on the card into favorites.

I kept wondering why a bunch of my custom POIs were turning up in the Favorites. Well, I was using the SD card to hold my folder of Custom POI files thinking I could carry them with me so I could edit and load them onto the Garmin from my home computer or work computer. I didn't realize the nuvi would see the ones that were in GPX format and auto load them into favorites.

Fortunately I keep my true favorites in a custom Google Map and use TakItWithMe.com to load them into my nuvi favorites, so I was easily able to clear out my favorites by resetting the nuvi and erasing all favorites and then reloading in my true favorites from my Google map.

I haven't had a chance to do it yet, but I plan on keeping the Custom POI folder on my SD card in the form of a zip file so I can carry it around with me but not have it auto loaded into my nuvi's favorites again.
