I accidentally deleted the gmapprom.img file from my nuvi 350! sad

I was trying to upload 2008 maps and to free up memory that was required (had only like 700mb left and needed like 950mb) I thought deleting the biggest file on the GPS would work. Well I had enough room now but the GPS doesn't work. Now it is nothing but an overpriced mp3 player! sad

I contacted Garmin through email and no word yet. What you guys recommend?

I have all the receipts and everything and I got it June 18, 2006. This isn't fair! sad

Go to your trash can in windows and restore it to the Nuvi, that is if you have that option...

Do not delete it from the trash can !!!

Yeah I tried checking for it. It wasn't in recycle bin. The file is too big I think for it to be saved in there and/or when you delete files from external hd's, they are deleted for good. I am so mad.

I don't know why Garmin doesn't put this stuff on ROM so it can't be deleted. Or just have a reset button that puts everything back to original state. This is ridiculous for a software loophole!

How is Garmin on the phone? Is their service decent? All I need is just the CD they use to install the stuff before we buy it. To me, I already paid for this CD and I don't have it.

Man I hate Garmin with all my might!

Why would you hate Garmin when you deleted the file before checking what effect it would have? I think you might want to take the blame for this one. Garmin will do all they can for you but if you bought a new computer and then deleted windows, would you find fault in the computer company? Yeah, give Garmin a call and tell them that you, by accident, deleted a file that renders your unit useless. I'm 99% sure they will help you with the unit.

--
You can walk a horse to water, but a pencil has to be led.

Deleting

If you deleted it directly from the unit it will not be in a trash bin. The only time files go to the trash bin on your computer is if you delete them from your computer. Obviously it is true when Garmin states in the manuals be very careful what files you delte if you are not sure what they are used for. You might post a request on this site asking anyone with the same unit to copy it and send it to you to copy to your unit. I think that would work but am not sure.

--

Not Garmins fault

mike this may be harsh but this is not Garmins fault, 1) From what I can tell from your post you deleted a file without knowing its function. 2) you did not backup before messing around with files. and 3) If Garmin did provide a full restore feature it would require more space in the already limited memory meaning, and you would have had to delete more files.
I am sure if Garmin can help they will.

Sorry for the duplicate post but Rayzer must be faster typist than I am.

I just called and they say

I just called and they say it has to be shipped back to Garmin. Am I getting charged for this? The guy didn't say there was any cost involved. Tell me what to do guys!

They gave me order and RMA number and address.

--

--

Haha I don't know. I assumed he would of told me on the phone if there was a charge. Either way, it is useless to me and I have already GPS installed on my phone. I plan on consolidating anyways. The GPS on my phone is better in someways because it gives me the number to the place I am going to and I can call that place LOL. If they give me that $175 BS, I will argue and then tell them to stick it up their @$$! It is useless to me anyways. Life is too short to be pissed.

Or you can

Or you can get the 2009 update. When I got mine, rather that installing from the dvd, I deleted the gmapprom.img file on my nuvi 250w and installed the 09 updates directly from the CNNANT2009Update_ENU.msi after entering the cd key. First, I copy the CNNANT2009Update_ENU.msi file to my desktop then install from there.

--
Mike

where do you live?

I bet another POI Factory member would be happy to get the file to you on a USB Flash Drive. I don't think that the gmapprom.img file is serial number dependent .... I would guess that if you got the file from another nuvi user you could get yourself up and running.

If you live in the NJ/NYC area I'd be happy to try it out w/ you! I have the nuvi360 ... same map file - I think!

Or, one of us can send you a drive with the file.

If you can confirm this through some of the more knowledgable users on this site, this may be the easiest and quickest option.

gmapprom.img file is serial number dependent

I maybe wrong but I think that the file in question is serial # dependent Thats probably why you have to have the codes to update it, other wise 1 person could update to 2009 maps and then send copies of the gmapprom.img file to everyone so they would have the updates free.

And MIKECART1 quit your bellyaching. I've been working with computers sense 1977 and have learned IF YOU DON"T KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING DON"T DO ANYTHING!!!

Overall

I am just going to pack it up and ship it to Garmin. Let this thread be an example of their customer service skills. I am pretty sure it will be historic too since I found others through a google search. So far:

-Deleted file Saturday 4-12-08
-Called them and put on hold for about 10 minutes 4-14-08
-Got RMA number
-Told to ship it to the factory
-Shipping tomorrow 4-15-08

Wish me luck! grin

Fair?

I am curious why you think this isn't fair? You deleted the file..and Garmin did nothing wrong...They are the one of he best CS operations I have delt with over the years! Why would you ever think that deleting the largest file would ever be a good thing and then blame someone else for that assumption!

Sorry about your situation but I really see it as your situation to fix...I'll be curious to see the outcome so if you could please post the final outcomes??

Good luck!

Copy Your Favorites

mike, more than likly Garmin will send you refurbished unit rather than return your GPS, so you might want to copy your favorites file. Plug-in your unit and open the GPX file then copy the filename "current".

Final Look Before Sending It Off (PIC)

http://i132.photobucket.com/albums/q21/mikecart1/Garmin%20nu...

Hopefully I will see again someday.

And I think it is Garmin's fault for leaving that option available. Now if I somehow found a way to link it up with a 3rd party connector and happened to see I could delete the file, then that is one thing. But the USB cable came with the product. Garmin didn't say anything about deleting stuff in the manual in the box or the e-book version online. And why they didn't give the full instructions in the box is beyond me. I paid $623 and at least I could of gotten a complete instruction manual maybe worth $10 at most. Anyways, enough worrying. I'm shipping this off tomorrow! Will keep ya'll updated. Maybe they will hook me up with the 350W. Now that would have me giving Garmin 5 stars! grin

I did the same. I`ve delected everything from my magellan, now I`m trying to fix it but so far stills the same. ANYONE knows how to fix it?
When I plug it on my computer, it looks like a dead gps.
Coukd someone give me a hand?
Thanks

Another thing is that the USB doesn't work
Seems like it is not recognized. I don't know how to make the sd card work as well.
I think I need to read the manual.

Bummer

Too bad you hit the delete button – I bet that will not happen again – ha ha. I have found the Garmin service to be excellent. I had (or thought I had) a problem with my Zumo. They were quick (maybe too quick) to have me send it in for service. A replacement was at my doorstep one week later – all better. It turns out it was a software glitch that was resolved in the last map update, but I did not know that at the time. Anyhow, good luck. I was under warranty so there was no charge, hopefully you will have the same good service many of us have experienced from Garmin..

Could be wrong, but...

When you do an upgrade on maps, doesn't it delete it anyways before putting on the new map set? It has too, cause there wouldn't be enough room on a standard install.

I would just redo the upgrade.

Even though it's not in the recycle bin it may still be on your hard drive. When you delete files under windows it just deletes the address that points to that file - the file itself is still on the hard drive.

You need to use a software program that allows you to get the data off the hard drive - there are several good programs out there.

Try this site: http://data-recovery-software-review.toptenreviews.com/

.

Highlight all then hit "Alt-Delete" that should fix everthing! wink
