Nuvi 660 hard drive

I just had to share this info with the group. Allot of you guy’s may already know this. I was reading in the form that some of the Garmin users were deleting the excess files off there Garmin to save space on the hard drive. I just finished doing that. I got rid of all the voices except English (300 mb) and all of my vehicles except the Tank and the blue car. Afterwards I started thinking about fragmentation and wondered about defragging the Nuvi L/drive. I just finished doing that and I think that my Nuvi responds faster to every command. I had to share this with the group and would welcome questions or comments.

Defrag

I have also deleted many files that are not used. How do you go about defagmenting NUVI and are there any potenial problems??

Should not need to defrag

A Nuvi does not have a " Hard drive" it has Memory. Memory is not subject to fragmentation. It may be faster because it has more Open memory, But I doubt that defragmenting sped it any.

Memory

What type of memory do you think the Garmin Nuvi 660 has?

What type?

If you're asking who made the chips, I'm not gonna pull mine apart to see. I'm presuming it's got a combination of RAM (random access memory) and ROM (read only memory). Just like what you've got in your memory sticks (thumb drives) and compact flash cards. Only this memory is much faster.

Search

Do a search for defrag on this site. There are numerous threads discussing 'why it doesn't help' to 'why it does help'.

The nuvi660 has a solid

The nuvi660 has a solid state memory system. Defragging it will not help. It helps in conventional harddrives because of the seek times associated with them. In solid state drives there is no seek time, every address is accessed just as fast at the beginning of the memory block as at the end.
