That would not be for a 2008 map update, what it may be is just a firmware update, what you need to do is go to the Garmin site and get the webupdater and run that, it will show all the latest and greatest, BUT not for the maps, those cost extra if and when you decide to update those.

The message that you got on the screen of your GPS unit is telling you that the maps are more that one year old and that you might consider updating them.

I'm pretty sure the message didn't say that the update was free. And it isn't.

If you want/need to update the maps, you can purchase the map update disk. I would recommend waiting until the next update is released.

And no, if you've had your unit for almost a year, there's no free map update.

Does that message come up on all units? And if so, does it come up repeatedly? That would be aggreviating.

From what I understand, it goes away after a while.

Does the year start from the date you update or does it come from the date the maps were distributed?

I only ask so that I can judge when to expect this message to start rearing it's ugly head.
