Need Physical Deminsions for the Garmin 2700

I'm of the age that I find myself getting lost and also need bigger screens. I see the Garmin 2700 going on sale at Costco on-line 4/11 ($500) but don't know if it will fit on my dash.

The listed specs show the hight at 4.5" and width at 7.5". However the pictures look taller when sitting in the mount device.

How tall is the unit when in the mount? How much space do I need between the dash and windshield?

Anybody have an alternate way to mount this? I have a double size (can't remember the real name) radio opening but this doesn't look like it will fit and I can't afford the built in ones.

I would appreciate any comments pro or con about this unit. I have one shot at getting it right and have not had a GPS before.

garmin gps size

I believe you are asking the size of a 7200, not a 2700. I have the 7200 and its height on the stand is almost 6.5 inches high. I move mine between a jeep liberty and my rv and I use the beanbag mount. My dash in the liberty is relatively small and is slanted. To keep my gps in place, I use a bungy cord hooked to my dash vent. The dash in my rv is large enough that the beanbag mount keeps my 7200 in place. You can find these mounts on ebay. Search "garmin beanbag mounts" If you have any further questions, let me know

Garmin Gps Size/Mount

Yes of course, it is the 7200. Being 6.5 inches high knocks out the dash mount. I didn't care for it sticking up that high in my car anyway.

After posting, I saw another option in the gpspassion.com forum. A poster there used a mount from ProClip. It's a clip that securely mounts on the dash without messing it up, and a device holder that screws onto the clip.

They make the clip specifically for my car, but I didn't see the device holder. Since I saw a pic of the 7200 in one they must make it. I just need to discover the number. Anyway, that is a much better solution for me. I took a look and they have the clip for the Jeep Liberty.

I gather that you use your unit quite a bit. What advice can you pass along since I don't have it yet?

Thanks for your help

PS: I went back to the other forum to track down how he did it and his post states that the Garmin 7200 quick release mount screws directly to the clip. Problem solved!

gps 7200

I have had mine for a 14 months and I really enjoy it. I bought this unit because I wanted the larger unit. The only drawback that I see is that it is not portable. However, I got the gps for when I travel either in the car of rv. I don't do much hiking anymore. I would definitely recommend this unit.
Remember one thing regardless of which unit you decide to purchase. DO NOT leave it in your vehicle.
Thefts are common from your vehicle. These crooks have been known just to look for any evidence that indicates you may have a gps inside. If you have to leave it in the vehicle, make sure that you remove it from the dash and hide it well.
By the way. This site is great for answering any questions regarding gps's. If I can be of any further help let me know.

>>DO NOT leave it in your vehicle<<

I keep reading this caution but am trying to figure out when I'd take it out and not. I think it would be safe at work - in a employee parking lot with people in & out. I park in a garage at home. The other is buying groceries parked near the store, or a busy mall in the handicapped area up close.

This will go in the "Mounting Cradle" which looks pretty easy to do but not like the quick disconnect puck thing. I was hoping to leave it in except for motel overnights so it would be there when I need it. They caution to not put it the trunk because of high temps (it gets over 100 in the summer).

I'm probably just naive but I've only had a couple batteries stolen many years ago when I lived in an apartment. Is this really that bad?

.

Yes, it's really that bad. In your garage is fine. And your workplace might be fine, but it might not depending upon how open and how accessible the location is.

Grocery stores and strip malls are a definite no no!

Take it with you. If it's stolen, you will likely be dealing with a broken window as well.

Wow, I will do that, but am

Wow, I will do that, but am disappointed. I don't suppose draping a towel over it would help either.

OK, that's the bad news, the good is I have decided to get the 7200 and the ProClip to put it on. That will place it near centered and the top pretty even with the dashboard top.

Next question is since I get it in April, will Garmin give me the new maps in July? Seems like they should.

Thanks again,

7200 gps

Just enjoy your gps and be sure that you visit this site for any questions regarding your unit or anything pertinent to the use of a gps.
Just one note. I visited the Proclip site and I did not see an adapter to fit the 7200.

I thought the same thing

I thought the same thing about ProClip, then I re-read the materials. The ProClip comes predrilled to accept devices match9ing the AMPS standard. The 7200 Mounting cradle is also drilled to AMPS so you just screw the cradle directly to the clip. I 'think' it's an easy matter to set the unit into the cradle and remove it also.

7200 mounting cradle

Sounds great. If you decide to purchase one, let me know how it works.

7200

GPS crime is on the rise so it would be best to make it unseen when parked. Towels and hats covering it do not work.

Mounts: http://www.mountguys.com/category_s/582.htm

7200 unit Dimmensions: 7.5"W x 4.5"H x 2.2"D

If you are handy, you might be able to install one of those flip down TV Screen type holder mounts on your ceiling.

ProClip

I have a 7200 mounted on a suction cup on the windshield and it works fine. I just looked at the ProClip and am intrigued. It could actually work very well and avoid some of the problems of having the unit on the windshield.

Me adult son and I were

Me adult son and I were brainstorming ideas to camo the unit. We decided it might work to put a poly-carb box around it with a series of red lights that blinked in sequence. Then it was an led countdown clock with an explosive device warning on it. All that from my initial idea of a boxy looking unit with medical oxy tubing coming out.

While fun to be creative, it probably isn't all that practical.

I think I saw a large

I think I saw a large suction unit at ProClip. I don't think I'd care much for it with such a large unit, but some installations may not offer a choice.

Anyway, only 7.5 days before the 7200 goes on sale! Then a few days to get it & the ProClip. I'll be on Medicare in less than a month and I feel like a kid the week before Christmas.

This has been quite a day!

This has been quite a day! My $200 off Costco coupon says I can't buy the 7200 until 4/11/08. But just for the heck of it I went to the Costco site and they have had it on sale for over a week. It said "while supplies last" and I did get a bit excited thinking "No, not after all this anxiety"!

The short of it is I now have an official order for a brand new Garmin 7200 and a ProClip for my car. They both should arrive in 3-5 business days.

Merry Christmas to me! I'll let you know how it all fits together.

BTW, I discovered something yesterday when I drove a group to a meeting (2.5 hr drive) in one of their new cars with built-in nav unit. I wanted to watch the blip on the display more than the road. I now know I have to train myself to not do that.

Now I need an SD card

My 7200 and ProClip are ordered, now I need an SD card. For the 7200, which is a proven card in 2GB and 4GB? Please not just brand and size, but also model. I figure if it works for you it probably will for me.

I read where some devices do not read the HC card and one case where a Garmen melted a Transend SD 150X (non-HC)card. I don't want to be that guy.

Thanks, folks. I decided on

Thanks, folks. I decided on a Kengstone 2GB SD card which is not HC and I hope it will work. It was cheap and I can use it elsewhere if needed.

I hope to read and learn all about this unit over time but I'm sure I'll return asking about POI, etc.

Thanks for all your help.
